You cannot disdain 79 million people and call it a strategy. I have Democratic friends who want to saw Trump voters off the country. My message to them is simple: Grow up!! You have to look at those people and say — I get why you’re angry. How do we bring you back into the social contract? Nativism, isolationism, antisemitism, racism — we’ve had all of it since day one. Lincoln called it an imperfect union searching for more perfection. That’s still the job. And if you’re sitting there sneering down at Trump voters with your bifocals on — take the bifocals off. Look in the mirror and accept your own culpability for how we got here. Trump is a wake up call. Answer it.

As someone who was in MAGA for 7 years, what I can attest to is: much of the appeal of MAGA is that it provides a community for those who feel politically disillusioned and left behind. These feelings should be acknowledged and validated; I am not defending ignorance, but most in MAGA are good people who have been led astray. The case that needs to be made to MAGA supporters is that we agree more than we disagree.

I think when historians look back at the 2024 election in later years all the stuff we are fighting about now will seem trivial. The storyline is going to be this unprecedented situation where the nominee had to drop out due to cognitive impairment and there was no recovering.
