🇮🇪 Dr. Margaret Connolly, the sister of newly elected Irish President Catherine Connolly, has been detained by Israeli forces after joining the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian aid convoy attempting to reach the unlawfully besieged Gaza Strip.
Israeli naval forces intercepted and boarded the flotilla roughly 70 nautical miles off the coast of Cyprus, an area that lies in international waters. Around 175 international activists, including several Irish citizens, were detained during the operation.
Dr. Connolly, a general practitioner from Sligo, had recorded a message in advance in case the convoy was intercepted, saying she felt “utterly compelled — as a mother, a doctor, and as a human being — to help.”
Speaking from London during an official visit with King Charles III, President Connolly said she was “very worried” but also “very proud” of her sister. The Irish government has called for the “immediate release” of all detained participants and condemned the interception, demanding Israel comply with international law.
