I am a semi-retired Maths teacher who loves tutoring. I have just started a Maths Jam in Redhill (Surrey). Oh, and my Erdos number was nearly 2 but I went broke

@TeaKayB On the other hand, once a class has achieved confidence in a difficult topic, I have frequently asked other staff to admit to those students if they once found that topic difficult. Adults modelling resilience rather than omnipotence!

Absolutely. If you're a not-maths teacher and ever utter something disparaging about maths in front of students you're making my job more difficult and I don't thank you for that.

@durhampotter @TeaKayB I think it would also really help if *other* teachers refused to model negativity about maths. It’s common in secondary schools in my experience for adults to say “I’m terrible at maths” and to be negative in a way that wouldn’t be acceptable about reading, for example.

The kids I teach maths to: "I hate maths"; "maths is boring", "you're boring" etc Adults after I give a maths talk: "I wish you'd been my maths teacher; mine made me hate maths." Maths teachers aren't the problem. Stop pretending they are.

@RedhillMathsJam is going ahead on the 21st, just in case anyone is not yet maths-ed out from this weekend's annual gathering. Sounds like it was great!

@Gregory87517595 @HeyMissSmith Would you rather your kids' teachers were well rested and able to function because they could afford a roof over their heads and had time to cook nutritious food? Or so overtired and overwrought they get sick every time they allow themselves to relax for half term?

@karenshancock Not at all. I once started during half term, too. I crocheted tiny handbags as prises for weekly mental maths winners and improvers when I did a stint as a Year 5&6 Maths lead (girls' school!) Secondary students preferred AA batteries as prizes in those days!
