Having read the whole thing... The primary protagonist of the article, a 66-year old woman doing one of the most notoriously difficult trails in a 2-week hike of approx 20 miles/day at altitude in difficult terrain, was probably overpacked and unprepared. The time he left her "to test her" was on an easier section of the trail that she could follow. She barely made it. He told her to quit, for her own safety. She refused, in her own words, because she wanted to get closer to the end before quitting. She put herself and him at risk by continuing. He can't make her quit. He should have refused to go with her at the start, but he didn't. So when she finally realized she had to go back, he sent her back. She wanted to be coddled and carried on one of the most difficult trails, 222 miles in the wilderness, at altitude, and she wasn't, and as a woman, that bothered her. Yet if she completed it, with his help, she would have done it all by herself. I got into some long hikes with my then-gf that she wasn't capable of. It slowed me down, and we did two 14ers that she wasn't able to complete, and therefore I wasn't able to complete because I stayed with her. So I stopped taking her on stuff like that. So then she went with her girl friends and slowed them down and prevented them from finishing peaks, but if they were okay with that then that was up to them. On one of those adventures, after failing to complete the summit and preventing at least one of her friends from doing so, she blamed me for loaning her a pack that had too much capacity, so she put too much in it. In retrospect, she told me a story of doing a famous, difficult 14er that many people take one shot at. She was, of course, unprepared for the challenge and rigor and didn't make it. She told me the story of how she got left behind while her friends went to the summit without her and she struggled to get back down and eventually someone else from another group helped her. I guess I should have heeded that story as a warning. And I'm sure that with this term "alpine divorce" coming up, she's retelling that story over and over. I doubt she's telling the stories of the two that we didn't get to finish - that *I* didn't get to finish - because I stayed with her rather than leave her behind. The harsh reality of most of these is that the women are way WAY over their heads, by their own choosing. They're not capable and they end up getting left behind on something they should never have done in the first place.

One woman we interviewed said: "I told him I didn't want to go that way and he started saying 'but the trail is that way.' I told him 'my truth is that the trail is this way.'"

@politicalmath Well to be fair, when your whole shtick is "As a young person, I care about climate change because I don't want the planet to be on fire when I grow up", and then you grow up and the planet isn't on fire, you have to take the next best grift.

@ldatko It might say that but realistically it's not going to happen. Females don't want to play on the male sports teams, and if it's a competitive sport, they won't make the cut. Speaking broadly, of course.

And Colorado High School Activities Association policy says “A transgender student shall participate in accordance with their gender identity.” So…students play on the gender sports team with which they identify. If a female student identified as a male the student would play on a male sports team, as is indicated at the top of the chart.

I don't accept your false dichotomy. But... are you saying that "all males" are a threat? If so, why should a male then go into the women's bathroom? Bathrooms are separated by sex. Go where you belong, not where you have to force others to deal with your own choices.

Any news article about pollution from plastic bags or other plastic products that does not point out that the US produces essentially zero per capita plastic pollution is ridiculously misleading. You can't even see the US here because it's basically on the x-axis. In a lot of countries, people literally just throw all their trash in the river. That's the plastic problem.

September, 2024. CNN's Kaitlan Collins pulls up a clip of Trump in 2016 talking about Somali migrants in Minnesota. Collins played the clip because she was about to bash Trump with Ilhan Omar before the election and wanted to show Trump's "racist and inflammatory" comments. Looking back now, what a self own by Collins. Trump was absolutely correct in 2016. Imagine if CNN spent even a fraction of the time investigating fraud that they spend on bashing Trump.

Those are probably the least expensive trees that money can buy, but oak trees don't grow everywhere, and they grow very slowly. The point about the huge difference in age of the two neighborhoods stands. I suppose it's possible they can't, but 99% of single family neighborhoods you can plant more trees.

@mark_elevate @sircalebhammer I’m no arborist, but those aren’t oak trees they’re planting. They always plant trees that grow 15 ft tall and stay tiny. I also doubt they’re allowed to plant their own trees.

I understand that new neighborhoods will not be mature enough to have wonderful canopy trees, duh. But why are they (basically) not planting any trees at all? I think I see four or five baby trees? A new neighborhood rarely looks good, but ones like this will NEVER look good.
