So...Trump's speech tonight. As election results came in 2016, I got a call from the deputy at the Chinese embassy in DC. Polls were closing. He was SHOCKED when Trump won. Beijing had zero plans for a Trump presidency. Zero. In Jan 2017, I spoke to several CCP senior bureaucrats in Beijing. They had no plan for Trump's trade policy. They were incredulous and embarrassed. They had no plan. So am I surprised by what Trump said tonight about 2020? Not at all. If true (I don't know), China organized this very quickly. Super sophisticated initiative. But it's plausible because Beijing didn't want to be as surprised in 2020 as it was in 2016.
