Do you know how hard it is to find a HVAC contractor that will install a modern heat pump?
“Heat pumps are overrated.”
“They don’t work in freezing temps.”
“They’re more prone to failure.”
Um, no?
The latest inverter cold-climate systems use fundamentally different technology with variable-frequency compressors and enhanced vapor injection that maintain full capacity at -5°F and rated operation to -22°F.
These are among the most efficient air-source systems available. And keep in mind, I’m willing to pair a heat pump with an efficient gas furnace for a dual-fuel setup if it makes sense.
But I have yet to find someone who will even entertain the idea of installing one, especially a MrCool or Gree Flexx, which typically means the contractor can’t hide behind an un-itemized quote.
I knew the HVAC industry was riddled with middlemen who make money through commissions and hidden markups, but I wasn’t expecting such fear mongering.
It’s eerily similar to the vibe from 8 years ago when I decided to ditch my gas car for an electric vehicle.
Back then everyone said I was crazy, but they just didn’t realize how much the technology had improved.
Now, electric vehicles are everywhere. I have a feeling it will be the same for modern heat pumps in homes.
Am I wrong?
