10 hours driving was well worth it today for the long staying Western Sandpiper at #Maidens, #Ayrshire. Originally thought to have been a winter plumaged Little Stint, it’s now coming into a bit of colour. Beautiful scenery en route. @Natures_Voice @RSPBScotland @BirdGuides

Caspian gull in Thompson Park, Burnley today. Also went to see the Firecrest in Methley, Leeds. Both new birds for me. Nice to bump into @scraggybirder too. Successful day!

Some quality @Clydebirding this afternoon when the wintering Yellow-legged Gull landed in the fields at Newshot Island. It soon joined the bread feeding. The drake American Wigeon and female Scaup were year ticks too.

Highlights from Northumberland today: 15 Russian White-fronted geese at Monk's House pool this morning, then saw the Black scoter very distantly from Goswick sands (shocking record shot). A Merlin chased and caught a Skylark over the sea while we watched the scoter @NTBirdClub

@scraggybirder I certainly agree with the impression in the field, looking at pics I initially thought it would be a nightmare to ID but actually looked quite distinctive in the field

Really enjoyed seeing my first American Buff-bellied Pipit today, a lovely little bird that was much more distinctive in the field than I was expecting, with a great call too! Set against the beautiful backdrop that is Ross Back Sands, one of my favourite UK locations.

@SFbirding Hmm fair enough I guess there's a chance they could be grey plover. I don't ever remember seeing flocks that big of grey plover from my time in Fife but I'd seen many large flocks of Golden plover, so I guess that's where my bias probably lies. So I'd still err on Goldens

@matttkj Very slim chance of Grey. Was a bird on 1 photo which looked Knot-like (numbers in Sept were similar to flock size in pics) & quality of pics made me wonder. Goldies only seen few times at RNP (singles), but flocks are seen in Carse of Gowrie, so likely just transitting upriver.

Fairly windy tomorrow with a strong possibility of at least some rain. Last chance to get something new for my 2024 #Dundee150 list. Where to go to maximise my chances is the big question.....

White-rumped sandpiper (found yesterday by @edward_parnell) at Whitesands beach near Dunbar this afternoon - a new species for me. Great experience watching it potter about among the sand and seaweed. With @naylor_swnaylor, @swad2016 and @HollingMark
