I have both the preview (27.0.0.40646) and the latest version (26.3) installed. D4 loads on both, but the non-preview version eventually locks up tight and I have to force quit it. I am pretty sure the two Crossovers are sharing the same settings and bottles. When I change something in one, I see it reflected in the other. The only difference I see in the two is that the preview is running Wine 11.10 and the regular version is 11.0.

The labs trained their models on the open internet — copyrighted books, articles, code — largely without permission, and their fair-use defense is essentially “learning from data is transformative.” Distillation is the same argument turned against them: a model learning from another model’s outputs. It’s hard to construct a moral principle that permits the first and forbids the second, which is why critics call the labs’ objections hypocritical rather than principled. Distillation is contentious because it lets a smaller model absorb much of a frontier model’s capability by training on its outputs — effectively free-riding on billions of dollars of compute, data curation, and RLHF work. The DeepSeek episode made this concrete: if you can extract 80% of the value of a $1B training run for $5M by querying the API, the economics of frontier labs get shaky. That’s the core anxiety — it’s a moat problem before it’s anything else. Legally, it’s mostly a contract issue, not a copyright one. Model outputs likely aren’t copyrightable (no human author), so the labs’ real weapon is terms of service — every major API prohibits using outputs to train competing models. But ToS violations are breach of contract, hard to detect, hard to prove, and nearly unenforceable against a foreign entity. There’s no statute against distillation itself. So the practical answer: it’s an economic problem dressed in legal clothing, with a moral argument that cuts both ways depending on whose training data you start counting from.

@FischerKing64 Folks 70+ are a little late to the online party - they don't understand how the scams work, and they can't conceive of a world where groups of people will take everything from you. I don't think the death penalty is too much for those scammers.

Anyone below the age of 50 is probably thinking - "how could anyone be so stupid!?" That's my impulse too. But some old widow in her 70s is a perfect target for this scam, which probably comes out of the Philippines or Pakistan. People who run these things should be shot.

A scam going around is you go to some website and a pop window starts beeping loudly, announcing you've been hacked. You are prompted to dial an 800 number, supposedly a Microsoft number, and hand over control of your computer. This happened to an older relative of a friend.

2011 Dilbert Classics Week

Here’s the review. Dutton Ranch is not bad if you can suspend reality a bit. Marshals is terrible. I didn’t realize how much I’ve come to dislike scenes with 2-3 second shots until Marshals. To go from Yellowstone where you take in the scenery to something that resembles a music video is jarring. A scene with nothing consequential in it will have a dozen 2 second shots. I made it about halfway thru EP 2 and that was all for me. If you liked Ozark you’ll probably like Dutton Ranch. A lot of the same vibes. Some of the character’s decisions on the final episode are hilarious though. Solutions involving law enforcement never considered. Overwhelming danger announces it is coming to you, so you stay there and fight it, even when you have no reason to and have a firstborn on the way.
