"[And the real estate market is] a disaster. But what held them up, the disaster started in 2021, but they had a bunch of long-lived projects that— so construction had only rolled 20%, whereas land, new permitting was down 70, 80%. So that's now starting to roll. "We saw construction year over year go negative in Q1 of this year. So those projects are now rolling off, and all they care about is employment, so there's going to be a lot of unemployed Chinese as we roll forward."

In the years that followed, the firm fulfilled that promise, distributing more than $180 million to the families of the 658 employees it lost. Lutnick also made another promise: every child of a Cantor Fitzgerald employee killed on 9/11 would be offered a job if they wanted one. By 2016, 57 of those children had joined the company. What began as one of the darkest days in the firm's history became a long-term commitment to the families left behind. More than two decades later, Cantor Fitzgerald's annual Charity Day continues to raise millions for charitable causes, keeping the memory of those 658 employees alive through acts of generosity rather than words alone.
