@freshbraininc @SecretSunBlog I’m not sure that the release date of the recording is a reliable way to determine which was written first or whether one had influence on the other. Maybe it was pure coincidence. I doubt it though. Not being critical. It’s music.

@maxepriest @SecretSunBlog Smells Like Teen Spirit actually came out weeks before U-Mass. Seems like the songs were written at about the same time. Black Francis says that he’d had the riff for years before U-Mass was completed, but I don’t know how Cobain would have heard it or if that’s even true.

Kurt Cobain always cited The Pixies, but "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is clearly just a minor-key rewrite of "World Shut Your Mouth." @lukeisamazing My understanding is that the point of Gollum in the story is to show that mercy is a strength. Gandalf's mercy made the difference between success and failure. If Gandalf had acted callously or cruelly like Sauron, Sauron would have gotten the Ring.

@jeremy_gans Interesting. I’ve certainly looked at bringing a challenge to the telecommunications offences which deem the use of a carriage service unless the contrary is proved, but there’s some relatively stable authority in the way of that argument.

@maxepriest @HighCourtofAus Sure there is. The High Court split evenly on the equivalent postal offence, and the justification for the internet offence is weaker. But, yes, it took an extreme guy like Monis to bring the challenge last time.

I’ve thought on this a bit when I was looking for a frame. Beautiful bed frames are usually made from nice wood (expensive), sell in low volume (for obvious reasons), and have narrow profit margins. People who make beautiful things from wood aren’t motivated to make bed frames.

@hexprax I am a defence lawyer. Some of my clients are advised to plead guilty, and they take that advice, sparing the victim from the consequences of cross-examination and the uncertainty of a trial. The sentence is at the Judge’s discretion, not mine. I sleep easy.
