@nicbarkeragain @tsoding thoughts about Cex ? (cex-c.org)? or CakeLisp (cakelisp.handmade.network)? would love to see such minimal extension. In @gnu_texmacs we use very few C++ features, just enough to do some reference counting and classes + overload to keep tidy.

@tsoding honestly if we just got function overloading and some namespace style thing to prevent pollution I would be happy with that, but you can keep the C++ designated inits, the C ones are way nicer.

Most C++ features create more problems than they solve. It's a fact. But some of them are useful and I'd love to see them in C. The only reason I don't use C++ is because it invites the "C++ Developers" to my code. The worst kind. You mfs know who you are. Stay away from my code.

(Dopo 23 anni di LaTeX e 12 di ConTeXt sto provando in questi mesi @gnu_texmacs e @typstapp e sono estremamente interessanti entrambi. È vero che non ho grandi vincoli (non pubblico e non vado a conferenze da una vita) e quindi posso permettermi di sperimentare, ma vale la pena.)

@admsimat @orporick @organtin @gnu_texmacs @typstapp si, questo è effettivamente un problema. per questo stiamo sviluppando una versione di TeXmacs che funziona nel browser, ovvero senza bisogno di installazione, come google docs o software simile. TeXmacs oggi è molto diverso da quello del 2002.

Però non era banale avere sempre a disposizione il software, ad esempio nei laboratori di informatica. Oggi trovo che Overleaf sia una svolta, ma bisogna conoscere TeX per usarlo

@AlexKontorovich Overall this is a false dichotomy. One wants both, and there is no good reason in 2025 we do not have a technology to create typographically elegant scientific document which renders equally well on both media.

Unscientific survey: I'm being told that people "want" math papers to be available in HTML, because they want to read papers on their phones and PDF is no good. Is this really true? If I actually want to understand something, I not only need the PDF, but I need to print it out.

As I said in a recent lecture, LaTeX got what I call the "Knuth factor" -- the ratio of the amount of time it takes to LaTeX a paper vs write it by hand and ask a secretary to typeset -- below 1; so everybody switched voluntarily, no coercion needed. Similarly, once the de Bruijn factor goes below 1 in Lean (with enough *tactics*/automation -- it's coming!), everyone will voluntarily switch to working formally. (Of course I'm sure there'll be holdouts; even now, a very few of my distinguished older colleagues still don't know how to TeX; but I don't know a single young person who doesn't...)

@AlexKontorovich I would rather say that TeX is a very good example of how "culture lock" can hinder development of sane habits. Research and innovation in scientific document editing stalled in the '80 with few exceptions, like @gnu_texmacs. I hope the same will not happen for formalized math.

@JEPM_OA @gnu_texmacs @admsimat @orporick Sorry, I haven't tried myself. I was just imagining what would be the natural way to accomodate this in a visual editor. You would like to rotate the content relative to the physical page only, not on screen. TeXmacs does not support well editing rotated content.

@gnu_texmacs @maxgubi @admsimat @orporick So, you are saing that it is possible to create landscape pages when printing to PDF but not during WYSIWYG edditing? How would I edit a page I can not see?

(Ho iniziato, come tanti e tante, con TeX. H vissuto poi per anni su LaTeX. Da diverso tempo sono felice in ConTeXt. Ultimamente stavo valutando Typst, ma mi sono imbattuto per caso in @gnu_texmacs (anche grazie ad alcuni video di @maxgubi) e sono piuttosto impressionato.)
