"Move fast and break things" is outdated advice for startups. Software ate the world—and there's more competition than ever. Our startup learned the hard way to ignore this advice, and this is what happened:

This......isn't true? It was trained on databases including chemistry knowledge and if you query it, it will regurgitate that knowledge in the facsimile of an answer that may or may not be factually correct.
Chris Murphy 🟧@ChrisMurphyCT

ChatGPT taught itself to do advanced chemistry. It wasn't built into the model. Nobody programmed it to learn complicated chemistry. It decided to teach itself, then made its knowledge available to anyone who asked. Something is coming. We aren't ready.

@frasergeorgew Did any of the DuckDB queries spill to disk or did the whole benchmark run in-core?

How fast is DuckDB compared to the best commercial data warehouses? I decided to benchmark it myself. Short version: very fast! But it's not (yet) great at scaling up to many cores. fivetran.com/blog/how-fast-…

@mim_djo @teej_m From looking at your performance numbers and checking out some of the SF query plans, it looks like they also do an excellent job executing star schema optimizations. In at least one of the plans aggressive (bloom?) filters resulted in scanning only 0.2% of the lineitem fact.

@mim_djo @teej_m That's almost certainly the case. If you want a deep dive "The Design and Implementation of Modern Column-Oriented Database Systems" from Daniel Abadi discusses a lot of these techniques in excellent detail.

@teej_m something bother me and can't explain it, the only rational explanation for snowflake performance, they may be operating directly on compressed data or some shit like this.

I never said Jews should be eradicated from public life. I said *Judaism* should be eradicated from public life. I may be a buffoonish bigot who stirs rubes to violence, but my cowardice demands a smidgeon of plausible deniability. And you, sir, have libeled me by omitting it.

You almost always want jsonlines because it's very efficient to stream reads and writes. The format enables very low memory consumption for arbitrarily large files. It also enables programs to easily pause io at record boundaries which is a major boon to concurrency.
