Robert McChesney lays out a model for what a perfectly free & democratic media would look like & what it would cost & why it's not all that different from US's first century when federal govt massively subsidized newspapers through the post office catalyst-journal.com/2023/06/how-to…

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he wants to phase out US military grant aid. But while this may sound like a step toward ending US military assistance to Israel, it's not. As Steven Simon explains in his latest research brief for the Quincy Institute: What top Israeli officials are quietly backing is not a reduction in American support, but a reorganization of it: shifting billions in resources from State Department–administered foreign aid grants into general Pentagon procurement accounts, industrial partnerships, and sustainment pipelines. The shift will strip away the political and diplomatic oversight mechanisms that make the relationship publicly accountable, moving it from a visible annual aid vote into the opaque machinery of defense acquisition, where oversight is limited and political accountability is minimal. The result would be a defense relationship that is simultaneously deeper and less transparent. Check out Steven's brief to learn more: quincyinst.org/research/the-d…

Zohran is proving why Abundance alone never works. You build more AND protect tenants from displacement. You remove legitimately onerous regulations on zoning and add new regulations to protect workers. The messaging is about affordability, not unleashing the private sector.

Espaillat is so out of touch with his own district and *his own race* that he couldn’t even bother to get Darializa’s photo right. We haven’t seen this kind of callous disrespect towards a rising challenger since … Andrew Cuomo. And we know how that ended.

As someone living under a US-backed dictatorship, I can tell you this is how it begins. 2 years and 21 State of Exceptions later, we’re ruled by perpetual martial law with Pentagon bombs, sexual torture, military checkpoints, activists starved, waterboarded or disappeared by soldiers. A little DEA operation turns into the opening of an entire FBI Office in our capital, the military killing protesters at a general strike turned into targeted assassination plots on indigenous labor activists, a few visits from a U.S. Envoy turns into U.S. boots-on-the-ground operations where campesinos are electrocuted. Ecuador has lived all of this already: the hijacking of a once socialist nation literally beat into a Yankee colony. We cannot let it happen to our sister nation of Bolivia too.

💢 BREAKING: Bolivia’s Chamber of Deputies voted to repeal Law 1341, dismantling key legal restrictions that limited the president’s ability to impose a “state of exception” and deploy the military during internal unrest. The law, passed in 2020, capped emergency powers at 60 days, required justification for suspending civil rights, and restricted military force against demonstrations. The repeal comes after four weeks of nationwide protests and road blockades demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz. Supporters say the law prevented authorities from clearing disruptions that have blocked food, fuel, and medical supplies from reaching major cities like La Paz. Human rights groups warn the repeal removes critical safeguards and gives the executive branch sweeping powers to order a military crackdown on protesters by decree.

If Espaillat loses on June 23rd, we should all revisit when he backed a challenger to State Sen. Robert Jackson in August 2022. Jackson won by 25 points, aided by a huge turnout difference between Whites west of Broadway & Latinos east of Broadway. The first crack in the armor?

It will blow my mind if Trump concludes a regional peace deal on the terms that are being discussed. By losing this ill-advised war he will wind-up as midwife to one of the most constructive transformations of geopolitical relations in our lifetimes as the Blob and Israelis howl.

In lieu of Zohran/AOC/Bernie endorsements, I think Robert Jackson is as good an endorsement as Darializa can get. He really is what Espaillat portrays himself to be: A beloved local titan deeply enmeshed in community institutions. His constituent services are downright legendary.

be cool if we had an opposition party that could criticize war-mongering without demonizing the target of said war, inflating threats and laying the groundwork for future attacks. It’s incoherent, tedious and draws no meaningful contrast beyond We’re The Competent Imperialists

Booker debuts Democrat neocon talking points on Iran deal, exclusively hitting Trump from the right "[T]his war is wrong" because it has allowed Iran to "fuel their terrorist proxies" Goal is clearly to reduce political space for a deal and raise cost for Trump to end the war

This is an extraordinary document written by the research arm of China's spy agency (the powerful MSS, basically the CIA and the FBI all wrapped in one) that absolutely zero media has picked up on. As far as I can see, I'm the first person to write about it even though it was published (in Chinese) on May 13th on chinadiplomacy.org.cn, a website of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The document contains perhaps the most authoritative description of where China thinks its relationship with the U.S. stands, and where it’s headed. The title of the report is “The Great Global Transformation and the Path to U.S.–China Coexistence” and I provide a full translation of it in my article, the link of which is at the bottom of this post. To summarize briefly the most important - and, perhaps, surprising - aspect of the document: China's spy agency - the one institution whose entire job is to worry about the U.S. threat - has largely stopped worrying. That's really what transpires from the document. They use a strategic framework borrowed from Mao's "protracted war" theory and, according to this framework, America's offensive phase is finished and China weathered the storm intact. The question is no longer "how do we survive America?" but "how do we manage America?" - and they're proposing a six-step relationship recovery program. I'll let you read the full document as well as my analysis of it here: open.substack.com/pub/arnaudbert…

BREAKING! Trump announces, after having had phone calls with the leaders of Saudi, UAE, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain - and separately with Israel - a deal between the US and Iran, subject to final approval, has essentially been reached. If you were wondering why warmongers in Washington have been freaking out, it's because of this: Peace is their nightmare. A few points: 1. Trump knows he will be attacked for this deal. The regional anchoring of this deal is not only important for its viability on the ground, but it also gives him a degree of protection in Washington. Obama managed to get massive international backing for his deal, but limited to lukewarm anchoring in the region. 2. Trump uses "The Islamic Republic of Iran," instead of just Iran, which will be noticed in Tehran. 3. Trump says he also spoke to Netanyahu and that the call "went well." The absence of details is interesting here. In summary: The two sides have not crossed the finishing line yet, but it is now visible and within reach.
