I'm always flummoxed when mainstream news sources describe a lawsuit, indictment, or pertinent document without actually linking to it. The SPLC indictment isn't linked in New York Times, AP, BBC, The Guardian, or any of first 10 sources I checked. Just have to take their word for it.

Under changes being considered in Washington state, many crime suspects could get out of jail for $20. The bail reform proposal: 1. Takes out the language that allows Judges to deny bail, even on capitol offenses 2. Changes the language to force prosecutors to prove why a bail jumper missed court 3. Caps bail for most Gross Misdemeanor crimes at $200, which means a $20 bill would bail out someone accused of assault, harassment, reckless endangerment, and even violating domestic violence protection orders. 4. Anyone with an ID can pay the 10% bail to release someone from jail, with 0 accountability to repaying the court if the accused misses their court date. As Brandi puts it; "Insane." Seattle City Council approves $480 million library levy renewal proposal for 2026 ballot // the Seattle library downtown is effectively a daytime shelter and bath house. It is a miserable experience to even walk past. It is so bad the drug store closed after a series of violent robberies (even with two guards). Every time I have tried to go in and sit to work I was accosted in some way. FWIW 15 years ago I used to be able to work in there (no books or research materials but desks and a view). Super sad. But worse is that the cost to operate almost doubles in real terms every budget cycle. Funding is based on an informal 7 year cycle of add-on tax levies that the city council drafts. Here’s the series of them real and adjusted starting with construction (which funded some other branches and does not include $25M or so raised privately). Like every city service, usage metrics are obscured. The library does not report by branch, conflates use of the web site with visitors, and counts use of digital resources the same as books. Plus the recent metrics are relative to a pandemic recovery. See spl.org/Seattle-Public… 2025 is predicting 3.8M in person visits system wide (king country) compared to 13.8M in 2015. The shift to digital measures “check outs” not individuals and is trending to a “record high” after 6.3M in 2025. Still nowhere near 2015. Yet the budget has almost doubled twice. Also the number of “books” has been stable at 1M since 2004. Joe Mizrahi is the Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW 3000, the largest private-sector union in Washington state. He also sits on the Seattle School Board representing District 4. For decades, UFCW locals have used front groups to block WinCo stores from opening. Now a Portland-based entity with no apparent Washington presence has derailed WinCo's first Seattle store, and Mizrahi's union, which has a direct financial interest in keeping non-union grocers out of the market, has said nothing. All while publicly mourning the loss of grocery access in the same Council District (5). /1

Good news: this isn't over. The Hearing Examiner sent the project back for further review, not a permanent denial. That means SDCI has to redo its environmental analysis, and there will likely be a new public comment period. What you can do right now: 1. Email your D5 Council Member Debora Juarez: debora.juarez@seattle.gov. Tell her you want this site activated with affordable groceries. She needs to hear from constituents, not just from "Lake Washington Working Families" of Portland, Oregon. 2. Track the permit: seattleinprogress.com/project/3042320 3. When the new SEPA review opens, submit a public comment supporting the project. The reason these appeals work is because organized opposition shows up and everyone else doesn't. 4. Share the case file. The more people who see that a Portland law office filed this appeal, the harder it gets for the next front group to pull it off: web6.seattle.gov/Examiner/case/… The comment period is where this fight was lost. It's also where it can be won. Tomorrow I'll be looking at who specifically benefits from keeping non-union grocery stores out of the Seattle market, and what public offices they hold. Stay tuned.

The County electeds (council and executive) don’t really get pressure when our transit system declines. And it shows. The revealed preferences over the last decade is that they don’t value a well-running and growing system. Transit enthusiasts need to beware and plan accordingly

Peak Seattle: 2200 warnings, but only 8 citations issued between May and December 2025, all of them voided (even if they hadn't been, the fine is only $20 if paid within 30 days, but that's all really theoretical since no one is actually getting fined). Fare evasion is at 35 percent, down only one percent from the same period a year previously, before enforcement efforts restarted. Fare box recovery of operating costs has plunged by nearly two-thirds since 2019 (from 24 percent of total costs recovered to only nine percent). The fare enforcement team that ended up issuing zero citations will cost Metro $3.1M this year. A Metro spokesperson correctly points out they are implementing the fare enforcement system as it was designed by the King County Council, which apparently continues to believe that any actual enforcement against rampant fare evasion would be inequitable.

People often make fun of NIMBYs for using environmental review to block new projects (in this case, a new grocery store filling a vacant big-box space), but the real problem is that cities even allow random people to appeal building permits. Blame the system, not the users.

Maddening story in the Seattle Times today that plans to put a Winco grocery at a former big box store site on Aurora that has been vacant for nearly a decade have been delayed and perhaps killed outright by an environmental impact challenge from a mysterious "neighborhood group" which "has no website and is not registered with the state" and whose lawyer will only say is "made up of King County residents." Hmmm... the same "neighborhood group" also unsuccessfully tried to block the opening of a Winco out in Renton. Winco is a majority employee-owned discount grocery chain know for providing competitive wages and good benefits, but they're not union. Hmmm...
