10. Now comes the strategic phase. It’s obvious that the U.S. and Israel are playing **good cop, bad cop** with Iran. Israel strikes. Meanwhile, President Trump says, “I’m ready to sign a deal.” It’s the same model Israel proposed regarding Hezbollah: The U.S. pushed for a deal *before* the war. Israel said - let us first weaken their capabilities. Then we can talk. Now, Israel is using the same logic with Iran. All wars end. This one will too. And the thinking in Jerusalem is: if we can cripple Iran’s capabilities first - and then negotiate - that’s the optimal outcome. But for that to happen, the U.S. must stay in the game. It must maintain leverage - either by escalating directly or by continuing to enable and defend Israel’s actions against Iran. The way this ends matters most – not the first strike. The Islamic Republic fought the Iran-Iraq war for 8 years, and stopped only when its leader, Khumeini, decided its essential for the future of the regime. If this is to have long-term meaning for the Middle East - if it’s to restore security and stability - then it must also ensure that Iran doesn’t use this war as cover to break out for a nuclear weapon. No senior Israeli intelligence or military figure believes Iran is incapable of doing so -even in the face of overwhelming Israeli success. What Israel has begun can only be successfully brought to an end by the United States.

1. The Israel-Iran war: The first day. We are now about 15 hours after Israel launched what it labels a *preventive strike* against the Islamic Republic of Iran - targeting its nuclear facilities and ballistic missile sites. Here’s a short recap of what’s happened - and what it means. First, this is not an *operation*. It’s not a *strike*. Israel is now **at war** with Iran. And Israel’s defense establishment understands that well. I spoke a short while ago with a senior Israeli security official. His most important message was directed at the Israeli public: "Prepare for Iran’s response, don't underestimate what they can do. It will be substantial and lethal".

תגובת צביקה נווה: "במשך כשנה ביצענו חקירה מקיפה ברחבי העולם אודות האוליגרך אלכס סקלר. ממצאי החקירה העלו שהתנהלותו הפיננסית בעייתית מאוד. נדגיש שסקלר הגיש ב-2024 בקשה לתושב חוזר על מנת להנות מאי תשלומי מיסים (חוק מילצין). חשיפת הממצאים תפגע קשות במעורבים. כתוצאה מממצאי הדוח שהדירו שינה ממוחו הקודח של סקלר ובנוסף מערכת היחסים הזוגית שנרקמה במשך הזמן עם גרושתו ויולטה סקלר שכיום הינה אשתי, הוא שיגר ושלח מכר משותף לאיים עליי שאחדול מלפעול בפרוייקט, המכר אמר לי שסקלר איש שמסוגל לעשות הכל, אל תסתבך איתו… השיחה הוקלטה והוגשה תלונה במשטרת גלילות על סחיטה ואיומים כנגד השניים. לעניין זריקת הרימון מדובר בתאטרון בולשביקי. הרימון נזרק לבית של שכנו. מעולם לא נחקרנו כחשודים ו/או במעורבות כלשהי במשטרת ישראל. כתוצאה מהאשמה זו הוגשה תלונה נוספת למשטרת ישראל נגד סקלר בגין ידיעה כוזבת על עבירה מסוג פשע. אני סמוך ובטוח שמשטרת ישראל תעשה את עבודה נאמנה. חברת CGI GROUP מלווה בייעוץ משפטי בכל מדינה בה אנו עובדים להבטחת הפעילות ובהתאם לחוק המקומי. עו״ד נבות תל צור מבכירי עורכי בישראל מלווה אותנו שנים רבות, כל ההתקשרות איתו היא על פי חוק. לכל תשלום הוצאו חשבוניות מס בהתאם. לפני כ-3 חודשים נשלחה אליי בחורה שהציעה את שירותיה. מהרגע הראשון ידעתי שהיא נשלחה ע״י סקלר ודרכה העברתי מסרים של כל מה שרציתי שהוא ישמע, והבין יבין… באם הנך מחזיק הקלטה כלשהי שכביכול בה אני נשמע בהקשר כלשהו בנושא אלכס סקלר, מומלץ לבדוק אם מדובר בהקלטה מבושלת שכן בידי את כל קבצי ההקלטה המקוריים. דוח החקירה שהכנו ייחשף במלואו בבתי המשפט באוסטרליה ובקרוב מאד בישראל. במידה ונתבקש אנו נשתף פעולה באופן מלא עם הרשויות, זאת על מנת שהצדק יעשה ויראה. כל נסיונותיו של סקלר להלך עליי אימים לא יצלחו ולא ירפו את ידיי. לעניין אבי החטופה, בחודש נובמבר 2023 הוא פנה אלינו באשר לבתו שנחטפה לעזה. באותם ימים הייתה ״אווירה״ שבעלי דרכונים זרים יזכו לעדיפות בעסקת שחרור חטופים. האב ביקש שנסייע לו בהוצאת דרכונים ממדינה אירופאית. נעננו לפנייתו ופרטי העסקה סוכמו, אבל כעבור כחודשיים התברר שהמצג שהוצג בפנינו אינו עומד ברף הנדרש, לפיכך ההתקשרות בוטלה והתשלום הוחזר. כל רמיזה על הפעלת לחצים לביטול ההתקשרות והשבת התמורה הינם שקר גס. לעניין דן גרטלר, בפרשה זו חתמתי על 3 תצהירים שהוגשו לבית המשפט המחוזי בתל־אביב. אדגיש שהאחים גרטנר ביקשו ממני להשיג ראיות בדרכים פסולות במידה ותוצאות הבוררות לא ימצאו חן בעיניהם ויוכלו לבקש לפסול את הבורר הנשיא בדימוס של בית המשפט המחוזי בתל־אביב אורי גורן. כאמור לא ביצענו את מבוקשם והתצהירים הוגשו לבית המשפט עם גיבוי הראיות לכך. לעניין מטה בני גנץ קמפיין בחירות 2019, כל המיוחס ל CGI GROUP הינה רכילות זולה". שותפו של נווה בחברת CGI GROUP יעקב פרי סירב להגיב. ממשטרת ישראל נמסר כי "החיפוש בוצע עפ"י הסמכות בדין ובהתאם להוראות החוק המאפשרות חיפוש בחשד לאמל"ח ללא צו בנסיבות העניין והחשד הקיים. כל טענה אחרת חסרת שחר".

@TechRav Prob a longer conversation but I wonder if this is an area where American and Israeli politics don't fit neatly with each other in terms of a simple right/left spectrum. Here in Israel there is a large % of Israelis currently anti-Bibi irrespective of right/left politics.

I have been listening to the Times of Israel every day since the beginning of the war but not it has gotten so skewed to the left politically with its anti Bibi rhetoric, I can’t. Anyone else feel this way?

The fact is the “symbolic” crowd has never lived through being under rocket fire and wasn’t here in Jerusalem or other areas under the attack so they say “symbolic” out of either ignorance or more likely a purposeful attempt be deceptive.

The worst takes on the Iranian attack of April 13-14 are those who call it “symbolic”. This was a massive, unprecedented attack of historic proportions. Never before in history were so many drones, ballistic, missiles and cruise missiles (350 in total) used at the same time in an attack, and from several different fronts and directions, including attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon and from the direction of Yemen and over Iraq and Jordan, and almost all of it timed to arrive within around ten minutes of eachother… Those who think it was “symbolic” or designed not to succeed either know nothing about the weapons involved, the complexity of planning this, know nothing about history, know nothing about the complexity of the air defenses involved and billions of investment it took over four decades to meet this attack, or are simply being purposely disingenuous (more likely).
