The judiciary's function, in part, is to protect the constitutional rights of its residents against governmental action or inaction that violates a constitutional right.
Dylan Blackburn@BlackburnDylan

@dtepper85 @JudgeBobOrr Hi David. There is a state constitutional right to education. The same constitution vests appropriations power with the legislature. The only way to reasonably harmonize these two parts of one document is to hold that the judiciary may order the state to provide education.

@donaldbryson Taxes support a societal structure that allows citizens the opportunity to earn wages, often high levels, bc risks are known/ predictable thru govt. We don’t life in a simple uncomplicated world that would allow low taxes.

North Carolinians already pay taxes three times on the same money: Income tax is when we earn it. Sales tax on what's left when we spend it. Property tax — every single year — on the home or land we bought with those post-tax dollars. Yet when the General Assembly proposes a constitutional amendment to require reasonable limits on property tax levy growth (with local voter-approved exceptions), critics cry “stripping local control!” Again, counties are political subdivisions created, organized, and empowered by the General Assembly under Article VII of the NC Constitution. The proposed amendment doesn’t eliminate local government’s ability to provide core services. It simply prevents unchecked levy creep that has seen North Carolina’s 10 largest counties grow property tax collections by 63% over the past decade, while inflation + population growth would have allowed only 51% (an excess of roughly $2.7 billion). Limited government means limits at every level — including the local level that hits families hardest. Protecting taxpayers from perpetual extraction isn’t undermining local control. It’s responsible governance. What do you think — should we give the General Assembly a clear directive to set sensible guardrails? #ncpol #NCGA

@ForwardCarolina @SenatorBerger He could have looked at the camera and told his county “I lost my way, I made mistakes. Im sorry. I’m still the best man for job”. Humility. Instead insulting Ads and humiliation. Served him right.

In the history of North Carolina politics, the fumbling of @SenatorBerger's primary by his campaign team has got to be among the biggest of all time. They had basically unlimited money at their disposal - literally tens of millions spent - for a 25-year incumbent with universal name recognition. Virtually unanimous backing by the Raleigh establishment. Corporate lobbyists roadtripping up to Wentworth and Mayodan to hold signs for him. They even bought a Trump endorsement by re-rigging our state's congressional map. All against a candidate with almost no money at all. And not only does Berger lose - he gets crushed 2-1 in his home county. That's how much people hate the Berger family. Spare a tear today for @JimBlaine.

Is there a more grotesquely misunderstood Supreme Court decision in history than Citizens United? Nearly everyone who complains about it seems to have no idea what it was about or what the reasoning was. It's just vibes.
Anders Åslund@anders_aslund

John Roberts' verdict on Citizens United in 2010 allowed unlimited amounts of dark money in US politics, abandoning all limitations & transparency. Roberts also voted for Trump's immunity. John Roberts is the 2nd greatest culprit in the destruction of US democracy after Trump.

🧵 THREAD: How Britain gave away the North Sea In 1970s Britain 🇬🇧 discovered one of largest oil windfalls in modern history. Harold Wilson initially saw it for what it was, a once-in-a-generation chance to build national wealth. The idea was simple: Use North Sea oil to create a sovereign wealth fund 👉 Like Norway later did 👉 To invest for future generations A long-term national asset. 🧵
Robert Jenrick@RobertJenrick

Britain has paid Norway over £100 billion for gas since 2021. For gas they’re drilling in the North Sea, the same sea Ed Miliband has banned new drilling in on the British side. Madness.

He had no experience, he had no qualifications educationally, he appeared to be fundamentally dishonest. There are voters that have no concern over experience and skills. Not a good path to travel.

@MsAnnaBaxter @Acyn Its performative. A man who has cheated on his wives and has a third wife is doing this as a sort of billboard on his empty soul. I don’t think there are many evangelicals in the military. Evangelicals are too chickenshit to put on a uniform.

Milton Friedman once proposed slashing the federal government to just 4–5 core functions — and his vision still feels explosive today: “Preserve the peace, defend the country, adjudicate disputes, protect individuals from coercion by others. Those are the fundamental functions of government. Everything else? Not fundamental.” In under 40 seconds he strips away the rest: no massive bureaucracies, no sprawling agencies, just defense, courts, and police (mostly local) to stop coercion. Decades later in 2026, with federal departments and spending far beyond 14, Friedman's razor-sharp minimalism still sparks fierce debate: Is this dangerously small government… or the only honest blueprint for limited government that actually respects individual liberty?

Jon Sopel makes the point bluntly. Trump was elected opposing regime change and nation-building, the legacy of 2003. Now we’re back talking about regime change again. BUT: 👉In 2003, 70% of Americans backed Iraq. 👉Today, 80% oppose action in Iran.

Blue cities are out of control, promising more, spending more, delivering less and pushing off fiscal problems to some future day. Democrats in city halls should stop governing as if the goal is to announce new entitlements, and instead make government work. My take:

Everyone is mostly talking about Gorsuch taking issue with the dissenters in the tariff case, but his swipe at Kagan, Sotomayor, and Jackson is exquisite. “Not everyone sees it this way. Past critics of the major questions doctrine do not object to its application in this case, and they even join much of today’s principal opinion. But, they insist, they can reach the same result by employing only routine tools of statutory interpretation.” "Start with the critics. In the past, they have criticized the major questions doctrine for two main reasons. The doctrine, they have suggested, is a novelty without basis in law… And, they have argued, the doctrine is rooted in an ‘anti-administrative-state stance’…” "Today, the critics proceed differently. They join a section of the principal opinion that applies the major questions doctrine.” "It is an interesting turn of events.”
