@Mathew_Winters1 @KoryAPounds Chickens? Guinea hens maybe...but they all have to free range without predation...unlikely. 100 is a low number when you're looking at greater than 1 acre. I would think a few hundred chickens and Guinea hens to cover anything meaningful

This is not normal - the increase in ticks visibly on us already is alarming. We have grasses kept low between mowing and grazing animals, wood are being cleared by mulching now - chickens are free ranging around the house and through the fields and still the ticks are showing. Yes - we live where there are ticks and they are normal - but this is more pressure than I’ve seen before.

@GGunthorp Cost is huge...as you are aware. Per a piglet only delays realized gains. Labor is and will continue to be the largest cost...this includes moving the huts, upkeep, and other unrealized and or expected costs.

@michael6_mc I suspect there is a model where investment per sow and cost of ownership per hut per piglet farrowed would be substantially lower than a farrowing barn if they were being turned every ten to twelve weeks but it’s too much investment to take that approach on everything.

We bought 390 new to us farrowing huts at auction on Monday for $7 each. It’ll take another trip at least to get them home. I imagine the labor of moving huts from grazing season to winter farrowing paddocks is more than a set of used huts?

@michael6_mc I really like Tom Frantzen’s / Practical Farmers E hut plans on line. I suspect we’d have $300 in materials. My son had one of the part time high school employees cost it out. $300 sticks in my head. It’s fourth down in picture.

Thought popped into my head today about the rebuilding of the cowherd. It it possible that we will be slow to build back because the industry has been breeding for carcass traits, rather maternal? Meaning the animals that can get it done are in even shorter supply?

Just heard a discussion (on the working cows podcast) about horns dissipating heat in cattle. Is this true?

I spoke to my mill yesterday about creating a finishing pig ration to optimizing fat yield yesterday. Spun them out a bit because everyone focuses on keeping pigs lean, especially pigs fed adlib. Am I the only pig farmer in the world optimizing for high fat yield?

@RobertKennedyJc @RobertKennedyJr what's the plan for replacing glyphosate from modern farming? What actual replacements are available. With the understanding of the median age of farmers...labor cost is a big part of all of this

We should talk about on farm processing and rebuilding local and regional food. And who should be in USDA next go around to make that happen. @RobertKennedyJr @KenDBerryMD @SBakerMD @RepThomasMassie @MikeCallicrate
Greg Gunthorp@GGunthorp

We built a USDA inspected slaughter and processing plant on the farm about 20 years ago. Not many little plants still scald. We scald and dehair all the pigs. Better quality than skinned.

Custom grazing dairy heifers for people in dairy heavy areas seems like a great opportunity. Challenge is getting the dairy guys to see the value. Anybody know why dairy producers are so hesitant and how one might get them to see the value? And for those curious the hoop house has our pastured chickens for our meat business.

@michael6_mc Think washcloth and soap that would remove grease. Poison Ivy oil is colorless but comes off as hard as smeared on grease. There is a YouTube video that explains the method my grandma preached to us.

@michael6_mc I think solar will keep us busy with targeted grazing for a while. The big orchards and vineyards are closer to the lake.
