Pasadena Officer Shot by Fellow Officer During "Horseplay," Chief Says PASADENA, Calif. — The Pasadena Police Department has released a Critical Incident Video concerning an officer-involved shooting that occurred on September 7, 2025, inside the department's parking structure at 240 Ramona Street in Pasadena. The incident resulted in injuries to one Pasadena police officer, who has since recovered. Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris said the incident involved "unsafe, out-of-policy horseplay involving loaded firearms" between department personnel. Chief Harris stated that one officer was wounded as a result of the shooting and emphasized that the conduct depicted in the video did not reflect the department's standards or expectations. The injured officer was transported for medical treatment and has since recovered from the injuries sustained during the incident. Pasadena police have not publicly identified the officers involved, and no members of the public were injured. The case remains under investigation and review by the Pasadena Police Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Karmelo didn't cry when the jury heard the 911 call after Austin Metcalf was stabbed.
He didn't cry when Austin's twin brother, Hunter, could be heard screaming in anguish and praying his brother wouldn't die.
He didn't cry when the jury was shown Austin's autopsy photos.
He didn't cry when they saw the blood-soaked shirt used in a desperate attempt to save Austin's life.
But he cried when he was found guilty.
And he cried again when he was sentenced to 35 years.
The only tears the jury saw were for his own fate, not for the life that was taken.
Austin Metcalf was robbed of his high school graduation, he will never get another birthday, another chance to live the life that was stolen from him.
Thirty-five years may be justice under the law, but for many, it doesn't feel like enough.

The Karmelo Anthony verdict shows that the justice system has reverted back to the Jim Crow South era. It is no longer about evidence. It is no longer about right or wrong. It is about keeping racial score through the prosecution and imprisonment of Black people. It was no surprise that an all white jury would find a 19 year old kid, who was bullied and harassed by two 6’1” bullies, guilty of murder while he was minding his business. We have seen this story before. A young Black man is put on trial, and somehow the burden shifts from what happened to him, to why he should not have defended himself. The facts become secondary. The optics become everything. The outcome feels predetermined long before the verdict is read. People will tell you not to make it about race. But race has always been part of the story in America. The hard truth is that many Black people no longer believe they will receive the benefit of the doubt when their freedom is on the line. And verdicts like this are exactly why. At some point, we have to stop pretending that everyone is playing by the same set of rules. Because the people watching this case saw something very different than what that jury claimed to see.
