@OrevaZSN Data centers can also use treated effluent for cooling, so they don't consume fresh water, but re-use water that has already been used for something else. Keep in mind that cooling tech is advancing quickly, so newer DC's are likely using newer tech than even recent ones.

@OrevaZSN Evaporative cooling is typically cheaper and uses less power. Appropriate when done right in water rich environments. Many/most modern data centers, especially in arid climates are being built use either closed loop glycol chillers, or other low water cooling technologies.

Anti data center people: I don't want a data center in my backyard. Well, how about Amazon warehouses? Amazon’s U.S. warehouse footprint is colossal, comprising approximately 445 million square feet. In contrast, the entire U.S. data center market accounts for around 150 to 200 million square feet of space nationwide. This means Amazon's single logistical network is more than double the size of the entire American data center industry. That's just Amazon. Now include Walmart, Costco, Target....

Reno has very few data centers of any significant size. Storey County does, and despite no prohibition, none of them consume significant amounts of fresh water. Those that do consume treated effluent.

Fair correction. I should have been more precise. The SNWA evaporative cooling ban is real. However it only covers NEW buildings. Existing data centers are grandfathered in. 23 Southern Nevada data centers, all grandfathered - consumed 716 million gallons in 2024. Google's Henderson facility alone: 352 million gallons, permanently lost from the Colorado River system. Reno, where data center construction is exploding, has zero equivalent regulation. Nevada still has zero STATE laws, while 30 states have passed comprehensive data center legislation. Local regulation with a grandfather clause protecting the biggest users isn't adequate protection.

I know that's not a state agency, but that's also not "Zero data center water regulations". Curious what the Pyramid Lake Paiute tribe intervened on that relates to Hoover Dam.

David Flippo should be ashamed of himself. A family tragically died in Texas — a heartbreaking loss with ZERO connection to Nevada, ZERO connection to CD-2, and ZERO connection to the political narrative Flippo is trying to manufacture. The suspect had no Nevada connection and did NOT possess a Nevada Driver Authorization Card, despite the misleading garbage being pushed to scare voters and exploit a tragedy for political gain. Using the death of innocent people to deceive the public and score cheap political points is beyond disgusting. It’s manipulative, dishonest, and offensive to the victims’ family. If David Flippo is willing to twist facts and mislead the people of Nevada just to get elected, imagine what he’ll do if he actually gets the job. CD-2 deserves truth, leadership, and integrity; not fearmongering built on lies.

Just learned about the concept of a “telescope ranch” in Texas. People pay to have their $10,000+ telescope rigs set up in the middle of TX to avoid light pollution. Every night the roof rolls back off the warehouses. Then you can remote in to your telescope and use it from anywhere in the world.

People must be nervous about Flippo’s chances of winning CD-2 in Nevada. Article after article supports Settelmeyer because he’s a 4th generation Nevada rancher. I keep thinking “So What??” How does that make him a better choice? Are more recent residents disqualified to participate in politics? Most of us aren’t ranchers. What’s so special about that? The other complaint I hear is that Flippo doesn’t understand our issues in Northern Nevada. So are they suggesting that he’s not smart enough to familiarize himself with our issues? What I do know is that Flippo is a strong conservative with connections in Washington DC. The Freedom Caucus supports him. He’s well-qualified to be our congressman. Lastly, why has Settelmeyer been pretty much absent in his campaign. Why are surrogates doing all the talking? His mixed voting record needs to be questioned by the man himself.
