Startups place value on hiring people with FANG experience, if not careful, you get ton of people who, in back of mind, wonder how much visibility/political juice an action will bring. You almost want to select for people who will ignore what boss says and do right thing.

@ericbahn Big case for a smaller dog. If they can fly with you at your feet or easily fit in the car, we’ve found we end up bringing our dog all over the place with us!

This is an insanely naive but sincere question: For people who love to travel a lot, has having a dog slowed down or limited your travel? Considering a family dog but torn since we love our trips. Appreciate your perspectives! 💛

@JoelEngardio Love the idea. Taiwanese night markets are the pinnacle of snack foods

While visiting my husband’s family in Taiwan, we ate our way through Taipei’s famous night markets. Now we’re bringing a Sunset Night Market to San Francisco! The pilot is Sept. 15 on Irving between 20th and 24th Ave. Expect lots of food, entertainment, arts & crafts 5p to 10p. I told the Chronicle that “a vibrant night market will foster community, stimulate the local economy and offer an antidote to the doom loop narrative plaguing San Francisco.” Read the full report on our night market: sfchronicle.com/food/restauran… I also told the Chronicle that “San Francisco has a lot of daunting issues to fix, but we have to remember that we are not a dystopian city. We have a lot of joy in San Francisco. We need to celebrate that joy and create more of it.” As a city supervisor, I believe the night market is more than just something fun. It helps accomplish many of the goals that our city needs to achieve: — Support small businesses and revitalize neighborhood merchant corridors. — Foster stronger community and public safety by activating streets and bringing people together. — Cut through city bureaucracy to form a blueprint for innovations like a night market that can be applied across San Francisco. — Give tourists a new destination to explore in San Francisco (the Sunset!) and draw more tourists to revive our local economy. — Create more joy as we create our best San Francisco.

Touring SOMA, seeing tiny startups building rocket planes and superdense fuel cells and general artificial intelligences. Say what you want about it, if you want to live in the future there’s only one city on earth.

To escape this catch-22… Either you have a way of speeding up the long sales cycle of concentrated supply (e.g, bottoms up sales Airtable/Slack) or lower the cost of getting fragmented supply (e.g, unlock enough value that they eventually come organically Udemy/Etsy)
Harry Stebbings@HarryStebbings

Favourite things when it comes to VCs analyzing marketplaces: When supply is super fragmented: "Ah, it is super hard to acquire, takes a long time to acquire 1-1 and small $ value each". When concentrated: "Ah real concentration risk. Long sales cycles to acquire" Too good.

In 2021 the city spent $1.1B on homelessness, up 500% since 2016. The result? Homelessness increased 64% Where does all this money go? Much of it is permanent housing, where people are paid to do drugs until they die (no or minimal detox and treatment offered or required)

This performative politics by the @SFDemocrats should have no place in SF. The SF DCCC has chosen to “embrace zero-sum politics rather than a shared opportunity to fix the city’s biggest problems.” sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/hea…

@danhockenmaier @andrewchen The interventions are time sensitive and usually expensive. Curious if there's any writing on how and when to make bets on those interventions.

@danhockenmaier I'd love to read more applied case studies on interventions made at key points when a marketplace was out of balance. @andrewchen covers some in the Cold Start Problem, about how Uber made short term expensive bets on driver incentives to rebalance supply and win certain geos

Just fleshed out the reading list on disruption theory on Long Form Reads. Some highlights: 1/ Foundational disruption theory from Clayton Christensen - Disruptive Technologies: Catching the Wave (Introduces "New Market Disruption") - Disruption, disintegration and the dissipation of differentiability  (Introduces "Low-End Disruption") 2/ The best critique of this theory, from @benthompson - What Clayton Christensen Got Wrong (original critique of low cost disruption) - Beyond Disruption (further solidifies this point and links to Aggregation Theory) 3/ Understanding the fundamental tech cycle underpinning disruption, from @CarlotaPrzPerez - Great Surges of Development 4/ Frameworks for understanding where you are in the cycle from @benedictevans and @mhdempsey - On Inflection Points - The Best is the Last - How to Lose a Monopoly Long Form Reads: danhock.com/long-form-reads

@ruima 🤦‍♂️ gotta respect that hustle I'd say the equivalent happens in well-off non- immigrant communities but less organized. The book groups my Mom went to where they chatted about who's getting in to what schools and how they did it functioned the same

@mercebent @GA So so true. Also ran a boot camp for a few years and I love following where our graduates went. I remember one graduate was so thrilled to land their first engineering role they bought us an “offer cake” to celebrate together

full circle moment 🥹 Was on a call with a founder & he said his colleague recognized my name in the system (from trying out the product). It was an engineer who took @GA’s coding bootcamp in 2014 via our scholarship fund focused on diverse backgrounds. He’s a Navy veteran. He’s been an engineer the last 10 years since pivoting careers. And now he’s building a product I could invest in. We grabbed coffee to catch up. Really heartwarming full circle moment. 10 years later and still so proud of the work we did at General Assembly. Startups create impact. I love this game.
