Desmos doesn't do equations with imaginary numbers, huh? Like y = (x-3i)(x+3i)? Asking for my College Algebra friends.

@mrdardy Delta Math is great for skills practice. Desmos activities are great for visualizing graphs, and there are great activity builder lessons already made!

Hey #mtbos I will be teaching Algebra I this coming year for the first time in quite a while. Can you send me or share some favorites for this level course? I've been teaching Calc and Precalc for the past 6 years exclusively

@MikeJToronto Students who miss a lot of days must be very independent learners using provided videos. In my experience this is far from the case. Many are provided services when at school, so miss those also.

I have students on my class lists that have now missed over 50 classes this semester but are still eligible to earn their credit. If we are talking "back to basics", we need to start with a minimum required level of attendance, post-Covid or not. #OntEd

Had a meeting on dealing with students who are habitually late to school and teachers first periods get disrupted repeatedly. It was all about how teachers could be better trained to handle the attendance and get them caught up as opposed to expecting students to get here on time

@ModestTeacher Strongly disagree. They are teens who do not know what knowledge they will need in the future. We are exposing them to different topics and helping them to learn perseverance, goal setting and the value of hard work.

Student apathy is driven, in large part, by the fact that students find what we teach irrelevant and obsolete. Agree or disagree?

@TeachMrReed Some freshmen definitely acting like 7th graders, but juniors and seniors have grown up, which is great to see!

Feels like each grade is at least two grades behind in terms of maturity. Certainly not every student, but generally, this feels accurate.

@JayWamsted My kids are almost 25 and 28, but if I had it to do over, I would definitely take their phones at night!

The only way a teenager could hit that daily average of 9 hours of screen time a day is if they're taking their phones to bed at night WHY WOULD YOU LET YOUR TEENAGER TAKE THEIR PHONE TO BED AT NIGHT

@MrsSheehanMath Must also come in outside of class and make test corrections prior to retake.

@MrsSheehanMath To be eligible for a retake, must have completed 80% of practice assignments prior to test AND the entire review. Second score counts, but can earn 100% on retake.

In anticipation of conversations I believe my department will have this year… If you give test retakes, what score goes in the grade book? Feel free to explain your reasoning. #mtbos #iteachmath

Teachers, what percentage of students do you think try their best when they take state-required standardized tests?

@mckeemath If they don’t know basic facts, I tell them to rely on the calculator. It is a big disadvantage for them when they learn to factor, simplify radicals or solve equations, but no use making them memorize at this point.

An unpopular take but I am struggling to justify giving passing grades to HS juniors who don’t know their basic times tables. What does #mtbos think of requiring timed tests on times tables at the high school level? And any suggestions for teaching times tables to 16 y/os? Lol

@Andrew82306019 @teachrealistic Most of mine is class work, not home work, if they use their class time wisely.

Parent: "What does my son need to do to do better in your class?" Me: "He actually needs to do some work." Parent: "Apart from that, what can he do?"

@teachrealistic If they are not doing the work, it’s time for repercussions at home. No screens, car, phone, video games, ear buds, friends over, going out—whatever it takes.

@cara__jackson Give them some space, but watch the online grade book. If they’re missing the first 5 assignments and fail the first assessment, find out why and have some repercussions at home if needed.

Lately I have been eating two slices of toast for breakfast. With a mug of tea. Then a bottle of water in the car on the way to work. I'm wondering if a healthier breakfast might make me more productive. What do you think? Do you have a quick and easy, healthy breakfast plan?
