Mayor of extraordinarily expensive and racially segregated Palo Alto, Tom Dubois (@votedubois), is worried about state housing legislation: "any housing that does emerge ends up housing only the highest wage-earners, not those who need it most."

Allowing more people to live car-free or car-light lifestyles near transit is one of the most powerful things California could do to fight climate change and protect residents from wildfires. @JoshBeckerSV @SenJoshBecker: I hope you'll sign on as a co-sponsor!
Senator Scott Wiener@Scott_Wiener

I introduced legislation (SB 79) to: 1. Up-zone areas around major transit stops (rail, bus rapid transit) for denser housing 2. Empower transit agencies to zone/permit projects on their land 3. Streamline (ministerial approval/no CEQA) projects on these up-zoned parcels🧵

@jemersmith What if someone wants to build more environmentally sustainable affordable housing on their destroyed lot instead?

@GaslightGrandma @IrateMaxwell @BigMeanInternet It seems like the Chinese government used policy to encourage development where there was not yet authentic economic demand. This is the opposite of the US, where local governments use policy to *prevent* development where there is *already* authentic economic demand.

Building many more homes is critical to reduce cost of living in CA & other blue states. Our failure to build homes is also the key driver of the demographic shift that’ll cost us in the next census — loss of House seats & electoral college. We must end the housing obstruction.

I’m excited by the news that the President-Elect will appoint @RobertKennedyJr to @HHSGov. He helped us defeat vaccine mandates in Colorado in 2019 and will help make America healthy again by shaking up HHS and FDA. I hope he leans into personal choice on vaccines rather than bans (which I think are terrible, just like mandates) but what I’m most optimistic about is taking on big pharma and the corporate ag oligopoly to improve our health. Before you mock him or disagree, I want to share with you some quotes that if he follows through show why I’m excited: “Level the playing field for Americans internationally on drug costs…cap drug prices so that companies can’t charge Americans substantially more than Europeans pay." YES! Colorado currently has an application just SITTING at FDA for us to import low-cost prescription drugs from Canada and we just need their approval. "In some categories, there are entire departments, like the nutrition department at the FDA that are – that have to go, that are not doing their job, they're not protecting our kids," YES! The entire nutrition regime is dominated by big corporate ag rather than human health and they do more harm than good “We’ve got to get off of pesticide-intensive agriculture.” YES! We have tried unsuccessfully to better protect people and pollinators from harmful pesticides here in Colorado and we need all the help we can get to take on big chemical companies and improve human health and the environment! For our pollinators and our people! 🦋 He will face strong special interest opposition on these, but I look forward to partnering with him to truly make America healthy again and I hope that we can finally make progress on these important issues.

@sp6runderrated This means a full Scott Wiener term in the CA Senate. If he is able to go even bolder, that could be a game-changer.

Re: Great Highway. The compromise would be a win for residents of the city to have the this open Monday-Friday and closed on the weekends. Is that so bad? Commerce on the weekdays party on the weekends!

@griffinlee415 @ryanmjohnson Having your neighborhood be a massive car sewer in order to facilitate cut-through traffic is very annoying. Not having that any more will raise property values.

@buccocapital It's the Housing Theory of Everything. If millennials could've bought homes at 28 instead of 38, they'd have a lot more kids, even with other things like child care and college being more expensive. Thank your local NIMBY politicians for this outcome.

Some thoughts: 1) My joy as a parent is immense. But it's almost more beautiful to watch my parents give so much love to our kids. I hope I get to experience that 2) Something is very broken. It's too expensive to have kids 3) Boomers should have shared their wealth earlier

@ArsonAtDennys @weneedhousingSF @bambipotf The emerging scholarly consensus is that unfunded inclusionary zoning requirements hurt affordability on balance by killing enough projects to outweigh whatever affordable homes get produced. Cities funding affordable units inside new developments is very cost effective however

@weneedhousingSF @bambipotf Trying to understand this. Is the idea that having a percentage of affordable rate housing itself is counterproductive or undesirable? Or are you saying he was using that to stall new developments?

Suspect there's a "frog boiled in water" aspect to rising cost of living. It's been a festering issue for a long time, and the jump in inflation may have woken people up to it. Just because it's been counteracted by rising wages doesn't mean it's not a problem.

@kavehcyrus @djw172 @JoelEngardio Smart politics would be to proceed with the closure ASAP and start implementing permanent infrastructure improvements so that it's clearly a net positive before Joel's next election instead of a lingering issue.

@djw172 @JoelEngardio I hope you are correct, for the sake of our efforts to restore moderation, common sense and usher in a boom loop in San Francisco.

To maintain the newly secured majority on the SF Board of Supervisors, the moderate coalition must either find a way to unwind Prop K or identify an alternative candidate to replace @JoelEngardio in 2026, as he faces a high risk of losing reelection. The tone-deaf extremist bike coalition, anti-car advocates, and urbanist YIMBYs pushing Prop K are out of touch with the moderate majority—including minorities and working families—and are naively undermining our efforts to restore San Francisco by imposing their unwanted ideology and creating unnecessary divisions.
Chinese American Democratic Club (CADC)@sf_cadc

We are deeply disappointed in the Prop K result & Supervisor @JoelEngardio’s approach to remove a lifeline for the west side that’ll fundamentally change the chance of large working families in his district. Prop K hurts Asian Americans who supported him. Where to go from here?

@sp6runderrated @stan_okl Yeah, I also think once you have a job and especially kids, one's free time to relax is very, very limited, and only people who are book nerds prioritize reading books. Everyone else watches TV, scrolls social media, or does another kind of hobby.

@mldunham @stan_okl I'm sure it is 0. I remember having a discussion with my old man circa 13-14. One thing he mentioned he regretted was he gave up on learning new technologies in his late 40s. Just didn't care to. And a lot of people hate reading and basically stop once out of school.
