"Lawless federal agents took another life." Fascinating framing from a governor whose own state has not, to my knowledge, sent out a single PSA telling residents the following basic fact: driving a car at a human being is deadly force, Governor. Not an inconvenience. Not a misunderstanding. Deadly force. And when the person standing in front of that car is legally armed, they are permitted — and often will choose — to stop you from killing them. That is not a partisan opinion, that is Physics 101 combined with about two centuries of settled self-defense law, two subjects apparently not covered in the curriculum where you used to teach.
Since you and your fellow governors seem allergic to saying this plainly, allow me, in eight languages, so nobody in your press office has an excuse:

Now, on the actual facts you conveniently skipped: Lucas Scott, 18, an eyewitness, told the Portland Press Herald he watched the driver "put the car into drive and was trying to hit the ICE officer" before the agent fired. That is not my framing, Governor, that is a bystander's account in your regional paper. Maybe read past the headline next time before you climb on the ledge of moral outrage.
For the legal literacy portion of today's lesson: DeShaney v. Winnebago County (1989) and Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales (2005) already settled that the government owes no individual an affirmative duty to shield them from harm they deliberately drove themselves into. You can be as horrified as you want, it does not rewrite tort law.
I would explain the difference between "lawless" and "lawful self-defense" further, but somewhere out there is a tree tirelessly producing oxygen for you, and you owe it an apology for how it is being spent. And before you lecture the rest of us on "accountability," maybe start by holding a press conference that does not require translation apps to contain a basic truth: don't ram federal agents with your car, and they will not need to shoot you.
But what do I know? I am only a medically retired combat medic who has actually treated what a moving vehicle does to a human body, unlike a governor whose closest experience with deadly force is a strongly worded tweet.
