Trump's disgusting speech on Iran last night reminded me of what the anticolonial leader Aimé Césaire said: “The hour of the barbarian is at hand. The modern barbarian. The American hour. Violence, excess, waste, mercantilism, bluff, conformism, stupidity, vulgarity, disorder.”

this school shooter geopolitics where our leaders just openly revel in cruelty and coercion seems based to its supporters and somehow refreshingly unsanctimonious to critics but it is ultimately *not realistic* because human beings, even in international relations, don't like naked coercion. Reciprocity and consent and mutual respect are as real and motive for us as fear--people have understood this and made a point of remembering and transmitting it for millennia--and those who cannot grasp this, we rightly recognize as defective or mentally ill.

Trump and Israel are bombing civilian bridges in Iran. Not military targets. Bridges that let people escape. Roads that let ambulances reach the wounded. Food, medicine, water: all blocked. We saw it in Gaza, then Lebanon, and now Iran. This is systematic assault on civilians

Yeah, looking around I definitely get the sense that our minds haven’t been rotted by media addiction and everyone appears to have strong discernment and critical reading skills

When I was a kid, people said television was eroding society and corrupting the youth. Since then we’ve had the same story for videogames, smartphones, social media, and now AI. Not to deny these technologies have all *changed* society, but the apocalypticism never quite pans out

Insane that the names of many of these people were given to the US, likely by the IAEA, as a result of the JCPOA. Why on earth would any sensible country on earth negotiate with the US in good faith again? Or not develop their own nukes?

A brief history of "temporary" systems that became permanent: -TSA -DHS -The AUMF -Patriot Act -No-fly lists -Fusion Centers -The war on drugs -FISA Section 702 -NSA mass surveillance *Now ICE in our airports* There's nothing as permanent as a "temporary" government program.

This isn’t a small deal. Restaurant Depot is where most mom & pop restaurants go to buy inventory because Sysco is so expensive. Restaurant Depot was privately owned. Sysco is owned by… you guessed it, BlackRock & Vanguard. Now private equity can control pricing for food costs with zero competition. Just like they did with housing. This should be an anti-trust violation, but we have politicians that work for Big Corp, not us.
Jonathan Maze@jonathanmaze

Notable deal in distribution this morning. Sysco is buying Restaurant Depot for $29 billion. Plans to expand RD more aggressively. It gives Sysco a huge entry into cash-and-carry and a large number of independent restaurant customers. restaurantbusinessonline.com/financing/sysc…

Just learned that I work less than a mile from the longest-running stone weathering experiment: NIST's stone wall test. Built in 1948, it includes 2352 samples of stone from 47 US states and 16 countries, and uses two types of mortar.

This is a key point. Israel as presently manifesting isn’t really a state as we understand the notion. States have borders, Israel does not. States have laws and rule of law, Israel does not in major swaths of the territory. Those are essential characteristics of a state and Israel doesn’t have them.
ergopraxis.bsky.social@ergo_praxis

Real kantian heads understand that the question of Israel's right to exist as any sort of state is a red herring, because Israel is not a State in the sense of a rechsstaat with general law, nominally equal concern for all subjects etc. It's the old mob in control of a territory.
