1. Iraq did a beautiful thing in 2013, creating space for a Jewish community to ceremonially bury sacred manuscripts. This act epitomized the human rights-based approach to cultural heritage. Here’s why. 🧵

For centuries, again and again, Jews and Judaism escaped persecution in Europe and found refuge in Muslim lands. One relic of this much-forgotten, if not denied, truth is the Sarajevo Haggadah, which survived both the Inquisition and the Holocaust thanks to Bosnian Muslims:
US Embassy Sarajevo@USEmbassySJJ

Every Passover, Jewish families around the world open a Haggadah and read the same ancient story of the journey from slavery to freedom. The Sarajevo Haggadah has its own journey to tell.  Created in medieval Barcelona around 1350, it traveled with Jews into exile when they were expelled from Spain in 1492. It survived the Inquisition, crossed borders, and eventually found a home in Sarajevo, where it was purchased by the National Museum in 1894. In 1941, during the Nazi occupation, a German officer came to seize it. Museum director Jozo Petrović and curator Derviš Korkut risked everything to keep the book secret. Hidden in a village mosque on Mount Bjelašnica, tucked among Qurans, it survived the war. In the 1950s, when another attempt was made to seize the Haggadah, museum staff stepped in again to save it.  The Sarajevo Haggadah has survived the Inquisition, the Holocaust, and the longest siege of a city in modern history. At every turn, it was saved by a broad community that transcended religious or ethnic identity. It is a 700-year-old testament to what solidarity looks like.  In the weeks leading up to this Passover, that message traveled to Washington. On March 24, BiH Presidency Chairman Denis Bećirović and Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmedin Konaković joined members of the U.S. Congress, Senate, and diplomatic community for a Congressional Passover Seder on Capitol Hill, dedicated to the Sarajevo Haggadah and the values it has carried for seven centuries.   Chag Sameach.

An Iranian missile just struck Jerusalem’s Old City near the Western Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, some of the holiest sites to Jews, Muslims, and Christians.

In Egypt, Muslim converts to Christianity are stripped of their most basic human rights as they are both silenced and persecuted.  Said Mansour Rezk Abdelrazek, a 30-year-old Egyptian citizen born to Muslim parents, serves as an example. Said embraced Christianity in 2016 and has been arbitrarily detained in Cairo (Egypt's capital) since July 15, 2025. Since his 2016 conversion, Said has endured severe persecution. This includes arbitrary arrests, torture, abuse, forced divorce, separation from his young son, prolonged surveillance, denial of legal access, repeated attempts to coerce him into renouncing his faith, and ongoing punishment for peacefully exercising his freedom of belief.  In Egypt, a female Muslim “believer” cannot remain with an "apostate" husband. Children born in Muslim wedlock are classified as Muslims for life. According to sharia (Islamic law), Said's wife was required to divorce him, and he subsequently lost custody of his child.  The organization @CoptSolidarity is campaigning for Said's release.
