@ibuildthecloud If you're not paying by the token, you're using it as a loss leader for the company. Once one of the companies "wins" they have to become profitable. At that point you pay token price + markup. Enjoy the free ride while it lasts.

Is Fable 5 really going to be going to be credit only? The cost difference between OpenAI and Anthropic just keeps getting bigger. I don't understand this model. I couldn't imagine ever paying token based pricing for Anthropic, it seems astronomical. I'm I totally wrong?

@plainionist Current theory is by the time seniors need to be replaced they will be replaced by AI. Plausible? Nobody knows at this point.

Serious question: If junior developers skip the struggle because AI does the work, where will the next generation of seniors come from? 🤔

@ThePrimeagen @antoniosarosi You don't get it, Prime. The kind of precise thought that comes with knowing how to program - That is OVER. You only need imprecise English now. Forever. Just like NOBODY needs to know what the compiler does. Nobody teaches it anymore because solved. There are no new compilers.

Before C, someone writing assembly would say "hand-writing" assembly is fun. Before Java someone would say manually allocating memory in C is fun. Just accept that coding has been abstracted and it will not come back, the minimum building block now is architecture components.

I’m convinced that a large % of programmers don’t actually like computers. As a side effect, are also perfectly happy to throw away their reasoning to a model as soon as they can. I don’t get it, at ALL. Don’t you *LIKE* understanding the magic of the machine? You do realize hand-programming (I hate that I even have to specify hand now) is fun…right?

I am gathering a list of assets I am going to have to get an artist to make, but in the mean time i am trying to put placeholders so i can tell them apart, and I asked grok for "ricochet" icon So riveting...

Be honest with me, Americans 🇺🇸 At what age did you FIRST shoot a gun? I'm an adult Japanese man who has never touched one. Ever. But I keep seeing family range days posted like… baseball practice. Is that normal? No judgment. Just trying to understand 🙏 (drop your age + state)

@cmuratori @thestanduppod I hear that they retained the same number of employees (roughly) that made Doom2016. They were not forthcoming about which departments retained what percentages relative to 10 years ago.

@LewisCTech The test suite just represents the bugs you've already found. Powerful, but limited. I actually liked Kelley's post... And I don't program in either language...

Based Andrew Kelley. Zig VS Rust is irrelevant here. I will always support real engineering with real thought behind it, over slop produced by tired computer programmers - no matter how technologically impressive the slop machine is.

@RetroMemoriesHQ Since I used a dot matrix printer throughout the 80s, I can assure you that I used a parallel port. They were not conveniently located on the MB. And serial mice were the norm. The ones that had proprietary ISA cards... Yuck.

@Apogee_Ent Sorry... I love your games. But the first name that popped into my head was Sylvanas Windrunner. Oh, and I was a fan of your studio back in the late 80s. Great side scrollers back then!

@ScottPresler As long as the demand for their services is real and durable, and they're made in a responsive way (not anymore of an eyesore than a large industrial park of some kind) then I don't see the problem. I have some doubts about the durability of current demand, however.

@wojtsterna @cmuratori Essentially, yes. iD becomes the "keeper of the IP" - they do concept art, gameplay design, and so on. Technical stuff gets purchased. Why write it yourself when you can license it? The IP is the moat. DooM could be made in Godot and still be incredible to play.

@cmuratori This, and also as my friend noted: it makes sense to reduce headcount by say ~20%. It also makes sense to close an entire studio. But what point is in slashing half of the studio? What are they going to do now? Outsource?

Assuming the current reports are true, suffice to say I'm waiting to hear the supposed rationale for laying off one of the best game engine teams in the world. Even assuming you are switching all your projects to licensed engines, these same people would instantly be your most valuable programmers for working with and extending whatever engine you license.

@cmuratori Proprietary engine prevents you from being able to "plug in" workers from other projects, or new hires. If you're thinking of your team as "units of productivity" having a standard engine (that people use in school) is better for business. Even if the tech is demonstrably worse.
