RIP Dungeons & Dragons. Jason Tondro, the project lead of D&D and senior designer at Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast explains that the intended audience is woke, and that WOTC doesn’t give a damn about what Elon Musk or any other “grognard” (a slur for old school players) thinks. “I just don’t take those critiques seriously even now. I consider those people not worth listening to, so I didn’t anticipate their ‘outrage.’” He’s referring of course to Elon Musk’s negative reaction to WOTC’s dismissal of D&D creator Gary Gygax whose creations, according to Tondro, would never pass DEI inclusivity review today because it was made by old white dudes and that’s totally problematic.

Seeing a ton of bad takes on the topic of #hasbro selling off WotC somehow being good for players. Could easily be worse, by a lot, and I'm dying to know which buyer you trust with taking over WoTC & why. #MagicTheGathering #mtgfinance

@Halimain Islands cost double :) jk. I assumed basic lands would not be tracked and would therefore be “free” as far as the MTG cost goes.

Wizards of the Coast sent a very polite email saying they consider our use of NFTs, as described in the mtgDAO whitepaper, to be unlawful IP infringement. They hint at their own NFT plans and ask that we don’t launch mtgDAO. Here’s why WotC is ngmi.

3/ It’s like the difference between making a copy of a book vs giving someone an invite to bring a book to a book club. I never would have thought you would need to get permission from the author before doing the latter. But I’m certainly not an expert. *mutes thread*

2/ Making a copy of a magic card and selling it as an NFT would be copyright infringement. mtgDAO NFTs are just a protocol tool to track who’s allowed to use the card in our Magic tournaments.

1/ I don’t know shit about copyright law, so I’m trying not to discuss it much, but I’ll tell you that mtgDAO NFTs being IP infringement is not intuitive to me.

@stupidestMirror @AndyWilson22 @SciCommForYou I also wish I had phrased the $50 part differently. When the project launched the tokens would obviously be worthless. I meant it more that if the project become popular that cheap decks were costing $50 or more I would personally vote to tweak the scarcity formula.

@stupidestMirror @AndyWilson22 @SciCommForYou These are fair critiques. Thanks for not being a troll. :) I’ve since proposed a “season” system similar to penny dreadful where total deck value would be capped to be legally played. You’d still get the meta diversity but a max cost.

@AndyWilson22 @SciCommForYou Thanks for reading :) I haven’t played YGO so I might be missing something but due to the scarcity formula for NFT mints the best cards would quickly be outpriced from the capped leagues. So they wouldn’t be able to play that card in their deck. Players would need to dig deep.

@AndyWilson22 @SciCommForYou Maybe I don’t fully understand scicom’s reasoning but the NFT cost formula make it prohibitively expensive if more than a few players try to use the same card. So you’re just not going to have players with the same cards no matter what. Players must get creative with unused cards

@AndyWilson22 @SciCommForYou I guess I’m fascinated by the prospect of a non-convergent meta so I still think it would be fun. What about the idea of leagues similar to penny dreadful but with capped deck cost limits.

@SciCommForYou @mtgDAO 100% agree. Besides the obvious copyright infringement, playing MTG the way @mtgdao envisions it... Well it's just a horrible way to play/participate in Magic...

@SciCommForYou Genuine thanks for reading the white paper and giving actual feedback. I’ll take responses like yours all day. I agree the pay to win aspects of the format make it not as fun for spike players. One improvement would be leagues similar to Penny Dreadful with capped deck values.
