August is Back to School Month, and as more students are getting ready to head back to class, it’s important to remember that safety is the highest priority to get everyone to school and back home. When you’re driving in a school zone, a few extra seconds can make all the difference. Slow down, exercise caution, and follow the posted speed limits anytime you enter a school zone.

The Florida Airports Council recently held a panel with @FDOT_Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E., @FLSecofCommerce J. Alex Kelly, @SelectFLA President and CEO Matt Swanson, and Gateways Advisory Council Chair Nick Primrose to discuss the strategic investments Florida is making in our supply chain. By bringing together industry leaders, we can explore new ways to enhance Florida’s multimodal transportation network.

Washington County, Florida was named for America’s first president and is home to many cities where Florida’s heritage shines. One of those cities in particular is Wausau: Home of the Possum Festival. This uniquely Floridian festival happens annually and is considered a rite of passage for most Panhandle natives. It is also one of the stops on our Florida America250 Road Trip and is taking place now! Transportation is essential to economic growth and quality of life. The recent @SelectFLA and @FLACommerce UK Mission trip reflects the kinds of strides we are taking in Florida to establish preeminence in the transportation industry and help state business flourish both at home and abroad. Through engagements such as the 2026 Farnborough Airshow and partner delegation meetings, this mission included focuses on the aviation and aerospace industries, both of which are a big part of Florida’s economy and will continue to bring high paying jobs to our local communities.

As we continue to honor America’s 250th birthday, we recognize Florida’s contributions as a major driver of the U.S. economy while also celebrating the role our roads play in keeping us connected and thriving!

Bridge height restrictions exist for a reason. Striking a bridge can cause severe damage to a vehicle, cargo, and infrastructure while posing a serious safety risk to other drivers on the road. We all share a responsibility to keep our roads safe, so it is important for drivers operating trucks and any other over-height vehicles to always verify the actual height before your trip!

With $9 million in maritime activity between Florida and Belfast last year, we met with seaport partners and toured Belfast Harbour during our recent UK leadership mission. We also visited @ArtemisTechLtd to experience their electric hydrofoiling vessels.

In 2025, total bilateral merchandise trade between Florida and the UK reached over $4.1 billion--Making seaports a major focus of this UK mission trip, including in Scotland. Thank you @forthports for hosting us and discussing the important role that maritime logistics and supply chain infrastructure play in global trade.

With one of the highest concentrations of drawbridges in the United States, FDOT’s bridge maintenance teams are always on call to keep things running smoothly and safely. With a total of 947 bridges in the state and 88 of them being movable bridges, our agency performs routine inspections and maintenance as well as emergency repairs. From welding the final touches to full deck replacements, FDOT is constantly ensuring the enhanced connectivity for our communities.

FDOT reminds drivers that roadway shoulders are for emergency use only. Using the shoulder to bypass traffic is unsafe and NOT allowed. Shoulders are reserved for drivers experiencing vehicle trouble who are awaiting assistance. Help keep drivers safe and traffic moving by using shoulders the right way.

FDOT had the honor of attending the @FIAFarnborough Florida Pavilion Ribbon Cutting Ceremony alongside @GovRonDeSantis. This occasion showcases the transportation advancements that are driving economic growth and development under the Governor’s leadership, further cementing Florida’s position as a global hub for aerospace and aviation.

#OTD in 1821, Florida’s first two counties, Escambia and St. Johns, were established just days after Florida became a territory of the United States. Separated by the Suwannee River, the two regions previously dubbed as ‘East Florida’ and ‘West Florida’ would become the baseline for every other county to follow!
