When "Auto (recommended)" quietly serves you 480p while calling it "the best experience for your conditions," YouTube is making an infrastructure cost decision and packaging it as a user preference. Run the math on a billion daily watch hours. If even 20% of viewers who would have manually selected 1080p now passively accept whatever "Auto" gives them, that's tens of millions of dollars per quarter in bandwidth savings. Google runs its own fiber and CDN, so the per-GB cost is lower than market rate, but at this scale, every resolution tier shift moves the needle. The old menu had numbers. 1080p. 720p. 480p. 360p. Clear, comparable, user-controlled. The new menu has feelings. "Higher picture quality." "Data saver." You can still get to specific resolutions, but they buried it under "Advanced" because every tap of friction between you and 1080p is money saved. The tell is the default.
