Reupping this terrific satellite work that shows 🇷🇺 right bank meeting points, crossing points and reception areas on the left bank that the Russians have been using since early November. 🇺🇦min of Defense estimates 40K Russians still need to cross
NLwartracker@NLwartracker

1/12 Since the announced withdrawal of 🇷🇺forces, it is time to have an in-depth look into how they want to get their troops & equipment across the river.During the past months have setup an elaborate system of ferry's crossing the Dnipro river. At least 8 ferry's have been active

Europe needs a *European* Franco-German motor, not this mutually adoring pas-de-deux of French dirigisme and German mercantilism that treats the rest of Europe, but especially CEE members either as "American puppets" or "Russophobes in the way of our profits".
The Economist@TheEconomist

“The EU will dearly need a strong Franco-German engine at its core over the next decade as it embarks on the most political transformation it has ever faced,” argues Laurence Boone in a guest essay for The Economist econ.st/3puL1E3

This produces weird moments, like this brush-off from Gorsuch. I wonder what Gorsuch thinks Shakespeare scholars have all figured out is the meaning of "Hamlet". You know, the one thing it meant, like, originally? That you study in Shakespeare school. time.com/5670400/justic…

The argument for originalism takes as a major premise not just that this method of interpretation is possible but that it is easy. Originalists need to be able to portray skeptics as perversely refusing the wide open easy road of originalism. (Why would they do that?)

Joe Lieberman pushed out one of the last liberal Republicans by running to the *right* of him. The tail end of the party realignment. RIP Lowell Weicker. No comment on Lieberman.
Steve Kornacki@SteveKornacki

Lowell Weicker, who died at 92 today, was one of the last truly liberal Republicans. A 3-term senator, he lost in 1988 in a race that saw his Dem opponent, then-CT AG Joe Lieberman, run to his right. In '90, Weicker staged a stunning comeback & became CT's gov as an independent:

@KevinRothrock It’s the same background that Alekseev (GRU) made his video appeal a few minutes later. And Alekseev was certainly not in prison a few hours later when he was one of the two leaders Prigozhin met with at Rostov HQ

@KevinRothrock The controlled withdrawal from the right bank of Kherson was the single impressively executed Russian operation of the war to date. Just fit very poorly with the timing of the ridiculous annexation announcement. If that was Surovikin’s doing, Ukraine will be happy to see his back

if you talk to normies about this sort of thing, their usual view is that taking over a company, then making that company take on debt to make a dividend payment to yourself either should be illegal or (more usually ime) that it already is ft.com/content/ee5754…

Interesting curiosity of web vs. phone interviewing is that the latter shows a bigger performance spread between different Republican candidates.
MULawPoll@MULawPoll

New Marquette Law School Poll finds that if the presidential election were held now, 49% of registered Wisconsin voters would vote for Biden, 47% for DeSantis. Between Biden and Trump, 52% would vote for Biden and 43% for Trump. #mulawpoll

Indeed. Additionally, imagine what would happen if the US sends troops, or starts occupying Mexican cities? Who do you think will rise up against us? The cartels with all their money and weapons, and we will make them patriotic heroes in Mexico. It would be a catastrophe.
David Frum@davidfrum

Again, the "bomb Mexico" talk is probably just ignorance-exploiting gas. But Mexicans may not know that - and even empty threats from US politicians may boost anti-American sentiment in Mexico when Mexicans vote in their own elections, midsummer 2024. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
