A24 and Blumhouse have developed a whole business model based on budgeting movies under $12 million. That model doesn’t work for the big Hollywood studios because their parent corporations and the shareholders demand the big paydays that are only achieved by expensive spectacles.

BEN AFFLECK on why Hollywood is dying. You need a MINIMUM of $25m to make the movie, another $25m to market it — so that's $50m straight off — and then (for showing the film) Theater’s take 50% too. So a $25m movie needs to make $75m just to break even.

@Saveydro G rated movies from 1968 to the mid-70s were wild. Look at the first cycle of PLANET OF THE APES movies. The Monkees' movie HEAD includes Vietnam War footage.

@ScottMendelson I think it's interesting that a lot of the early films in the Disney remake wave, especially PETE'S DRAGON and CINDERELLA, didn't try to replicate the original animated film. They stayed true to the material but these movies didn't feel like a Disneyland exhibit.

When Sam Altman was reinstated at OpenAI after an outside law firm investigation, no report about what was found was ever released. That’s because none was written. More in my full @NewYorker investigation: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

I realize that a lot of the highest profile releases are remakes & sequels, but if you're under the impression that original horror movies aren't being released, you're just not paying attention. The market is FLOODED with original horror. Follow @HorrorCalendar & @BDisgusting!

Sounds of Cinema review: YOU, ME & TUSCANY features beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes in a beautiful setting while looking for love and cooking delicious food. But the film is so polished that it feels plastic and the story is emotionally hollow. soundsofcinema.com/review-archive…

Sounds of Cinema review: 2026’s FACES OF DEATH is a satisfying serial killer thriller but also a relevant work of media criticism that is smart and scary and unsettling. FACES OF DEATH is what the most recent SCREAM sequels should have been. soundsofcinema.com/review-archive…

Sounds of Cinema review: MIKE & NICK & NICK & ALICE has just enough in it that is strange and funny to punch up an ordinary shoot-’em-up picture. The humor and weirdness carries the film through its flat moments. soundsofcinema.com/review-archive…

Sounds of Cinema review: NORMAL owes a lot to HOT FUZZ and other action films but its mix of humanity, humor, and stylized violence gives NORMAL an identity of its own. It satisfies as an action film and Bob Odenkirk gives the film a soul. soundsofcinema.com/review-archive…

Torching the @InternetArchive & the @WayBackMachine is akin to burning the Library of Alexandria and wiping our digital memory - at a moment when media corporations & the government want to hermetically seal us in a bubble of their propaganda. We can't let this happen.

"It's like nothing we've ever seen before." Except in 1968, 1990, and 2006. Just last night I saw the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD with a full house at @wifilmfest. A woman next to me had never seen it. She was enthralled the whole time. There's no reason to remake it.
Bloody Disgusting@BDisgusting

Vivica A. Fox stars in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, a brand new upcoming remake of George A. Romero's classic zombie masterpiece. Directed by Christopher Ray.

EXORCIST II is not a misunderstood classic. It's ultimately a failure. But Martin Scorsese (a booster of this film) is probably right when he insists that it deserved better than it got.

EXORCIST II intended to make Regan into a saint. That would have been an interesting direction for the character. The idea didn't work out due to a lack of a coherent vision and disasters behind the scenes but watch closely and you can see the idea in the full length version.

I got to see a double feature of BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL, the documentary on the making of EXORCIST II, followed by a screening of the original cut of the film at the @wifilmfest. BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL is terrific and seeing it alongside the feature made me reconsider EXORCIST II.
