@JoannaCannon Oh Joanna, I'm going to have to stop reading your wonderfully evocative reviews, I'm pre-ordering everything. This one will be released on my birthday, so it can be an early present 🤭😍

Lovely reading friends, brace yourselves. In 24hrs I started and finished EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL AND NOTHING HURT, and hand on heart it's one of the most powerful novels I've ever read. It is EXQUISITE. I'm almost too afraid to tell you about it, for fear of not doing it justice. But I'll try. This is the story of Travis Smith, a very ordinary young man, living with his cat in a very ordinary English town ... but Travis is actually far from ordinary. He is, in fact, Death in the modern world, and his job is to bring comfort to the dying, and help escort them on their final journey. Travis (understandably) keeps himself to himself. That is until he meets Dalia, a young single midwife (perfect career choice), and her boisterous 8 year-old daughter Layla. Travis (being Travis) always knows exactly what's ahead, but now, for the first time, he's beginning to see the joy in being alive. Now I want you to trust me (and more importantly trust Ben Reeves' incredible writing) because you can't summarise this book in a few sentences. It's far too profound and unique and extraordinary for a quick description. So I'll explain another way: The writing is incredible. It's the kind of writing that reminds you why you love reading. The story is unique. I've never read a novel like this. I was utterly transfixed. The rest of my life lay abandoned. The cover is not lying, it will break your heart, but your heart needs to be broken (trust me) because *this book will change your life* and I guarantee it will completely alter the way you view the world. And once you've read it, you will want everyone in your life to read it too. I talk a lot about how important pre-orders are to authors, and this is even more relevant for a debut author. It's a big ask to risk your money and reading-time on someone you don't know BUT (trust me again) this book is so incredibly special and somewhere between the first page and the last, you will (like Travis) discover the joy of being alive. A huge thank you to James Roxburgh for very kindly sending this to me, and to Ben for writing a PERFECT novel. Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt is out in July from @AtlanticBooks.

As much as I enjoy returning to authors I know and love, there is something very special about reading a fabulous debut ... and this is the most fabulous debut. THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS is set in a boarding house in 1950s London, where a collection of (hugely entertaining) lodgers appear to have acquired a rather inconvenient dead body in their sitting room, and so we go back in time to discover just what happened ... and why. This is a literary who-dunnit, and perhaps a literary who-isit, as no one at 42 Tregunter Road is exactly who they seem ... The Kindness of Strangers is a glorious murder mystery, from a time when people drove motorcars and wore wristwatches, and actually spoke to each other in pubs, rather than endlessly scrolling on their phones. According to the press release, it is a 'romp', and I absolutely agree ... BUT Emma Garman so very cleverly weaves in the less attractive side of post-war Britain, the outdated laws, the outdated attitudes, and she does it so expertly, it doesn't detract from the joy of the story, but offers a quiet reminder that these carefree, optimistic times weren't carefree and optimistic for everyone. To weave this into the writing, without ever detracting from the enjoyment of the story is utterly brilliant, and it made this novel so beautifully nuanced and genuinely thought provoking. I loved every single character in this story (with a special mention for George) and they all burst into life immediately, thanks to Emma's wonderful writing and her mind-blowingly brilliant attention to detail. It was also *superbly* plotted, and there are so many twists and turns, I guarantee you won't work it all out until the very end. Pure escapism, utterly joyful, but with a really important underlying message, should you accept the author's invitation to think a little more deeply. A huge thank you to Carla Josephson for sending me such a brilliant story, and of course to Emma Garman for writing it! You do not have to wait long for this one, it's out from @ViragoBooks on the 23rd April!

The hate unleashed by this fella with this odious tweet is something else to behold He knows exactly what he is doing The irony is this chaps pinned tweet- where he talks about "respect" towards another woman. It's not enough to say 'I am leaving X' as it's toxic. It's important to stay and speak up against such vile nonsense. Utterly reprehensible stuff. Her name is Athika Ahmed- doing wonderful work to improve others health. And am sure all political parties would agree with that Thank you Athika Link: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/… @wesstreeting @StuartAndrew @Keir_Starmer @KemiBadenoch

NHS doctor here, Rupert. If you'd checked your facts before this racist dogwhistle, you'd know that every NHS doctor can speak English - as proven by their IELTS proficiency (look it up... or are you just a populist hatemonger for whom facts don't matter?). Kindness may not solve everything, but my God the hate you spew is builds nothing, improves nothing, and only stokes division.
Rupert Lowe MP@RupertLowe10

A comment which sums up the mad delusion of many on the left. ‘Kindness’ can overcome migrant language issues in the NHS, I’m told. Good luck with that. I’ll go with the doctor who can actually speak English, thanks.

The majestic Wells Cathedral in all its splendor. The Scissor Arches you see were built in 1348. The cathedral’s central tower had been completed by 1313, but its weight caused foundation shifts. To prevent collapse, they designed the arches as a bracing system to redistribute the tower’s weight. Pretty brilliant, right? ph: leevistal

This is Trevor Fisher, an inpatient in @ArthurRankHouse in Cambridgeshire, speaking to @Channel4News this week. I am a palliative care specialist and Trevor’s interview has devastated me. His hospice has just found out that in 6 months, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust will withdraw its £800k funding. This means that 9 of the hospice’s 16 beds will close, denying patients like Trevor the precious end-of-life care they need. In total, 200 people a year in Cambridgeshire will now be forced to die in an overcrowded hospital instead of the hospice environment they so longed for. Some will doubtless end up dying on trolleys in corridors - we witness this far too often, these days & I can tell you, it is barbaric. @CUH_NHS says it has made this “very difficult decision” following a “value for money assessment” - confirming what I have long known as a doctor, that too often, patients with terminal illnesses are treated as second class citizens whose lives simply don’t matter as much as other people's. Yet the real responsibility here lies not with the NHS trust but with the current government, who is forcing the NHS nationwide to cut clinical services in order to meet impossible “efficiency savings” (what weasel words those are). These cuts were necessary, say @CUH_NHS, “in order to maintain core services within a reduced budget” - that is to say, the reduced budget they are now receiving from this government. So this is on you, @wesstreeting, and on you @UKLabour. You've chosen to do this & now patients like Trevor must live - and die - with your choices. I believe that the measure of a civilised country is how well it cares for its most vulnerable members. The difference between politicians and me is that I look the palliative care patients they are failing in the eye. So I will put it to you directly, Mr Streeting. We are still a rich country capable of affording decent, humane palliative care for all. Do you really care so little for dying people that you are happy to fail them on your watch? Thank you @channel4news for covering this story. #palliativecare #hospicecare #NHS

Well- that was a blockbuster 2 years as an elected Councillor @RCPhysicians 🔴Fought for IMGs, SAS and LED doctors. (RCP now has documents to stand by) 🔴Challenged overt secrecy of Council meetings. (RCP Council changes are coming) 🔴Fought a lot of chicanery (Goodness-there was a lot) 🔴Part of small group who brought an about turn re PAs. (Yeah I know lots others claim credit now 😎) Kids- always better to do something than be part of group-think Lovely messages all around - thank you. Yet-it is always the case-rules are different if you don't fit the profile. C'est La vie. Last few weeks has shown up some genuine friends- and many without a spine. Anyway, A bit of time in Carbonite harmed no one. 🤣 I will, of course, be back. Like every single phase of my life. You may not like my style- but I live by my outcomes- and my passion to fight for whats right- whatever the consequences. Regrets? None. There is no compromise. For now- holidays beckon. Thank you again x

@parthaskar There are times in our lives when we simply can't be all things to all people. You needed to prioritise yourself and your family, and that was the right thing to do at that time. You have many more battles in you, the shame is that there have to be so many battles 🥺. Take care

Thank you to all who have offered support & kind words... To all who have asked why 'Backed down'/ why didn't you 'pursue it'? This was the year when my Ma got ill- and I was balancing all things till she passed in Dec 23 It made me low, the struggle was much and the lack of empathy, the dismissiveness burnt me Only those very close to me know that side of the saga- such as @AntonEmmanuel2 Maybe I did back down- yet? That was the way to ensure I didn't lose my mind-and still do my jobs re #T1Diabetes etc Sometimes in life? You have to make a call. So I did. As the saying goes? "The process is the punishment"
Partha S Kar 🇮🇳🇬🇧🏏🎥@parthaskar

There is a sense of relief about the issue around @NavinaEvans being now in the public domain I have been asked about referral to @gmcuk The answer is “No” For the same reason I never mentioned her name in the public domain since end 22 Or decided not to complain even after encouragement from some in @NHSEngland The sad thing? The offer to meet and chat were multiple- yet never accepted What I (and many others) do believe is that such individuals should not try to damage others who can’t battle back while moving to further roles post @NHSE_WTE shutting down Whether @wesstreeting believes in an open culture and an NHS which can speak up about issues? Is up to him @DHSCgovuk It was the toughest period in my NHSE career And I am still here- thanks to friends, family and oodles of privilege. Would I do it again? Every single day for any one of Generation Next Yet? One hopes no one ever has to take their own life for us to be in such a situation. Ever 💔
