“However busy, you should read.” A short essay I wrote for Warren Fernandez’s, “What We Read, and Why”. No matter how busy we are, I hope we can all find the time, energy, and bandwidth to make reading a habit, as I have tried to do. – LHL go.gov.sg/w7k9c0

🌳🧬1/ Forests face escalating threats from pathogens due to climate change & global trade. Yet forest pathology lags behind crop science in understanding microbe-host dynamics at the molecular level. Why? We lack the model systems that revolutionized plant pathology.

Out in #Science! Co-leading with 2 other first authors, this work is a major part of my PhD. We study whole-genome of #indigenous populations from North Asia and South America to uncover the longest human migration and other cool genetic mysteries. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

A GWAS study with non-model species can be challenging, as the population demography needs to be understood first. Jiming Liu's work on Chinese Sapindus species is out: doi.org/10.1111/pbi.70… Great collaboration between @ntusbs and @BFU_IC with Profs Liming Jia and Zhong Chen!

A prospective PhD student should look for a kind and understanding mentor, not necessarily the most brilliant one or someone working at a prestigious institution. A kind mentor will focus on your progress and work to uplift you.

biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/ Individual-based simulations are a great way to model populations with less abstraction and more realism. But there hasn't been a thorough guide on how to set up a continuous-in-space simulation, what emergent behaviors to expect, and why.

The graph suggests that subgenomic approaches are equally adopted as morphological ones since the 2010s? True for tropical angiosperms? Not sure...The people, facilities and, importantly, samples aren't there. Temperate commentaries often don't fit tropical reality. #taxonomy
