@ale1735187 @TheGingerBill I believe bill is mostly talking about closed source software. How do I compile fortnite or photoshop from source?

@TheGingerBill Linux always catered to the more technical user base and generally didn’t care about making fancy guis or easy to use binaries in favor of command line and compiling packages from source yourself. Nice to see more folks entering the ecosystem lately.

I don't know if a lot of people have thought why this happened. To make Linux viable for the layman, Valve had to make Proton (derived from Wine) so that Win32 API became the first and only stable ABI on Linux. Why did Linux Distro devs not care about stable ABI historically?

Can we limit the number of HN posts where none of the commenters have a clue what they're talking about to one a week? I don't have the energy to explain the security@/linux-distros situation everyone apparently skipped over from the past years.

@spendergrsec @LukeDashjr I did read on their site or their company's X a/c this morning a note that they deliberately kept it quiet in public until patches were ready. Privately they hit everyone relevant with the Five-Bell alarm.

Upstream's covering up of security information they're aware of at time of commit is directly related to why your distros have no fixes for the copy.fail vuln. Completely irresponsible.

@toavahi_ @Fish_andChipper @TaroNuke A key aspect of the question is guessing how others will respond (your loved ones, friends, a non insignificant portion of society, etc). Modelling the responses of others. Any reframing will heavily change that (will a 5 year old tie themselves to the tracks? Etc)

Everyone presses blue = Everyone survives Everyone presses red = Everyone survives Most people press blue = Everyone survives Most people press red = Red survives, but straight up all the blues get killed Red is beneficial to only you, you don't even save anyone by choosing it
MrBeast@MrBeast

Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press? BE HONEST.

@nonetosee @ALazyUniverse @Jaereku "the translation is indeed the translators translation" this is how I understand the "my comics" quote, and it strikes me as self evidently true?

@nonetosee @ALazyUniverse @Jaereku Hypothetically "re:zero" by translator A would be a different work than "rezero" by translator B.Hence, you could call one A's re: zero and the other B's re:zero. This does not in any way erase the author from the equation, but the translation is indeed the translators translation

As you grow up and think about art more you realize there is quite a bit of truth to this. Our experiences are immensely shaped by translators, for better or worse, often outweighing the base text in their influence on us
Don Tworry@nonetosee

@autopilotgod There's this smug superiority among many translators particularly of Japanese works where they think they're better than the original creators.

@nonetosee @ALazyUniverse @Jaereku Notice the quotes. I don't think the intention here is to say "I am the sole (or even biggest) creative mind behind this final work". It's to say that there is a non trivial amount of creative/artistic work done by the translator, such that a different one would write smthn else

Untranslated JP honorifics in an English script only make any sense with a cast or setting that is explicitly Japanese in-universe and that is obviously not the case with an entirely different fantasy world. "King-sama" or "Marquis-dono" just comes off ridiculous in English
Chibi Reviews@ChibiReviews

We need to have a conversation about the cultural erasure of honorfics We always saw "San", "chan", "sama", "kun" in anime, but now we dont. They are now replaced with Mister or Lady. Like wtf

@crim479 @inkblotPrincess And replicating the source language experience for the target language audience is exactly what a translation of a piece of fiction should aim for. The purpose of fiction is to elicit emotions, so any translation that wants to be faithful should also aim to elicit emotions.

You have to be a little dumb to read this as a boasting of personal superiority to the original writers and not just a fairly simple truism about the nature of translation.

@LifeformDigi True but not really a crunchyroll or "antimale dub" issue, its an industry issue. Its not like CR can legally stream stuff in japan if the IP owners wont sell them the rights. Most people would agree geoblocking is dumb, but so is conflating issues and blaming the wrong entity

@VnX_NeiRiZz @HuskyGoalie @bkeyzer_ Depends what you mean by better. TTL is probably the one with the most participants and uses more standard RM settings. Redbull I think has the biggest top 1 prize but it's EW settings which are basically only for redbull and not the standard. Hera won TTL too though
