@ashleyschendel I never did understand wallets anyway. How can one sit comfortably with that thick thing in their back pocket.

Very rarely will you need to buy your husband a new wallet, but when that day comes, it is somehow a major household decision and you cannot screw it up. Men will carry the same wallet for 20 years with the corners falling apart and still say it’s fine. So this is not the moment for creativity. Slim, durable, leather if he’s a leather guy, metal if he already likes that kind of thing. Do not surprise a man with a weird wallet.

I have a feeling he's neglecting his duties as Mayor, is there any way to kick him out now he's spending every waking moment on this by-election campaign instead of actually doing the real job he was elected to do. He has zero skin in the game - if he loses he's still Mayor - should be forced to resign NOW - and make it real.

@ryan_murton @SamCoatesSky You don’t have to hand in your notice for just applying for another job, only if they give you the job. Not sure how this is any different

NEW: If Andy Burnham wins the Makerfield byelection he is required to quit the Manchester Metro Mayor and it will hold an election. Government has passed legislation to change the mayoral voting system away from FPTP to a proportional system BUT The government haven’t passed the necessary secondary legislation to enact this change. So as it’s stands, a mayoral election would be held under FPTP

I see Andy Burnham is running in a by election, something I once did. Here are a couple of red flags: 🚩 There’s something presumptuous in making the by election about Andy and his career. It’s almost inviting voters to reject him. 🚩 Makerfield, grok tells me, was 2-1 for leave. Perhaps unwise to make it about rejoining the EU? Andy & co came of age when folk talked about weighing the Labour vote. They might discover those days have gone

This is terrifying @Ledger. I just received a physical scam letter at my home address in Italy 🇮🇹 How the hell do scammers have access to the addresses of Ledger users? This goes way beyond phishing emails now. People’s safety is literally at risk.

I went on a date and ordered a salad and fries. That was my meal. The waiter wrote it down and moved on to him. He asked, “Does the club sandwich come with fries?” The waiter said yes. He said, “Great, I’ll have the club.” Then he looked at the waiter and said, “And you can cancel her fries.” My fries. The fries I had specifically ordered for myself. Canceled without discussion, as if he had full legal authority over my potato decisions. I just sat there staring at him. This man had known me for maybe 20 minutes and was already editing my order. I asked why he did that. He said, “You can just have some of mine.” That was not the point. First of all, I wanted my own fries. Second, I do not want to negotiate over side dishes with a man I barely know. And.,......

Yes, exactly. It's a pay-as-you-go system: NI contributions from today's workers and employers mainly pay for today's State Pensions and other benefits. The National Insurance Fund isn't a savings pot invested for your future—it's spent in the same year, with just a small working balance maintained. No personal fund builds up for you. That's why the system relies on enough future workers to support retirees.

The UK should scrap the state pension. Give every newborn a £10,000 investment account instead. £10k at 7% for 67 years = roughly £930k. The average person pays about £113,000 in NI over their career. That buys you £241/week at retirement age. Why are we still doing it this way?

@grok @samhfinance So this money paid in by current employees is paid to existing retirees isn't it? It's not saved up in a fund to pay for the future is it?

National Insurance contributions mainly go into the National Insurance Fund (a separate pot from general tax revenue). It's a pay-as-you-go system: current workers' NI pays for today's benefits, with ~95% funding the State Pension. Smaller amounts cover contributory benefits like contribution-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Maternity Allowance, and Bereavement Support. A portion is also allocated to the NHS before hitting the Fund. gov.uk has the full breakdown.
