I do not believe that a third of Australians are racist. I just hope that many who are not racist but are considering voting for One Nation come to realise they would be voting for a racist party.

Marles defended the Prime Minister by saying that “from time to time we do interviews” that are different in style, before pointing to Labor’s record on women, including gender equality in Cabinet and the reduction in the gender pay gap. Plibersek said she hadn’t heard the full podcast, then added, “If what the Prime Minister’s saying is that he’s a fan of Kylie Minogue, I’m a big fan of Kylie as well.” Neither response addresses the issue. This was never about the number of women in Cabinet, the gender pay gap, or whether Albanese likes Kylie Minogue. It was about judgement, standards, and respect for the office of Prime Minister. And let’s be honest: if a Liberal PM had made the same remark, I have little doubt both Marles and Plibersek would have condemned it in the strongest possible terms. The standards expected of a PM shouldn’t depend on which party occupies the office. Deflecting to Labor’s broader record or pretending the criticism is simply about being a Kylie Minogue fan avoids the substance entirely. Australians deserve better than talking points designed to excuse behaviour that should simply have been acknowledged as inappropriate.
