Existing open vehicles will be fitted with unbreakable glass or iron mesh. The context: two leopard attacks at Bannerghatta in 2025. Three fatal tiger attacks in the Bandipur-Nagarahole landscape in a single month last November. A five-month safari suspension that cost Karnataka's ecotourism sector an estimated Rs 3 crore per day. A 10-year-old boy killed by a leopard near Nagamale. Notably, no visitor has been killed or injured in an open-jeep safari in Karnataka's tiger reserves specifically. The ban is pre-emptive — and it is permanent. What it means for the state's premium wildlife tourism industry, which markets heavily around the open-vehicle experience, is yet to be addressed. With the first International Big Cat Alliance Summit 2026 just weeks away, chaired a high-level review meeting of Project Cheetah to assess the progress of the programme and deliberate on the future course of action.
