Sharpie deserves the publicity. It invested in robots and workforce training that led to average wage increases of 50% with no headcount reduction, while also increasing production speed by 3-4x, boosting quality, and not raising prices. wsj.com/business/sharp…

The only way to preserve the good parts of the old "elite" consensus while discarding the bad parts is for the old elite itself to adopt RW populism. But this is very unlikely to happen, because the worst parts of the old consensus were a form of two-faced self-dealing that allowed the old elite to profit from public service and influence indirectly ("indirectly") to compensate them for avoiding naked corruption. Generally speaking the pattern here is some anonymous person or persons in the White House is doing insider trading on the timing of Trump announcements and may have made thousands of dollars; meanwhile Nancy Pelosi's net worth is nearly $300 million, widely believed to be almost exclusively from trading on Congressional information. A Trump official is traveling on "official business" and appears to be having more fun than most people do on their actual vacations, whereas a Democrat infrastructure bill with have $700 billion in direct giveaways to Dem constituencies with no deliverables attached with $200 billion in actual infrastructure. And on and on. Medicaid fraud, SNAP fraud, construction fraud, Burisma... So what is the pattern here? In general (and I think this pattern likely holds up in other countries as well), populist impropriety is more brazen, more vulgar, more clueless, and "elite" impropriety (quotation marks because we all know we're talking about people like Nancy Pelosi) involves gains that are are 3 orders of magnitude if not 6 orders of magnitude larger. The political hacks who understand the of not being brazen, not being vulgar, of consulting a lawyer before YOLOing, only very rarely embrace populism. Why? Because while they can advocate for murderers and rapists, or replacement migration, or transing kids without their parents' consent and still have a career in politics or media or NGOs, if one of these people puts on a MAGA hat they are setting their social networks on fire, because they are threatening those 6 orders of magnitude of "sophisticated" corruption. So anyone with an elegant aesthetic revulsion at crude ways of benefitting from politics is very unlikely to cut themselves off from future employment as a matter of principle. To breed a principled elite that is not tempted by any form of corruption, neither the petty forms because they're ugly and demoralizing, nor the masked forms because they cripple the state and mortgage its future, would be a massive undertaking. It is probably far too late for that. We just need to accept that realistically there is a choice between vulgar politicians and robber politicians.
Will Solfiac@willsolfiac

There is a genuine problem with 'right-wing populism' whereby those willing to break bad elite consensus rules are also likely to break good rules such as being against corruption. We need to carry on breaking the bad elite consensus, but without replacing it with third worldist self-dealing. I believe that the most important challenge for the right over the next few years is to develop leaders who can reach beyond simply being self-interested rule breakers to being rule makers, of a new, better type of rules. I do genuinely believe this is possible. There's nothing inherent that means integrity in public life needs to go along with support for insane, self harming immigration and social policies.

@Clare97097915 @willsolfiac @edwest i'm talking about claims of insider trading, which would have happened before the announcement. that's why they circled this small peak on the 2m chart. there was more volume on the announcement, which is to be expected.

@nullrespecter @willsolfiac @edwest I don’t know about the chart. But I was watching markets that day. I saw Trump’s statement make a difference then Iran denying and markets reversing. Maybe Trump had tactical reasons. Obama’s manipulation was targeted, which is a more profitable inside trade.

One thing I think I will always do when I am my own architect is that after the over all floor plan is fairly set, I think I would take a concept model and scale the whole thing down by at factor of 0.92 or 0.95. I find virtual reality always feels a bit smaller than irl, maybe this is because I am a small bodied human but I think a final scale down could make things very cozy, better fitting and then obviously 8-5% cheaper. Over scaled is often a problem. I can’t wait to have a highly precise imagination so that I can just look at plans and dimensions and feel the space accurately around me.

i'm saying the small spike in volume before the announcement isn't evidence of anything, because it's in line with activity the days prior. they ran a TV news story claiming it's insider trading specifically on oil, and to make the case, they had to not show any activity from the day before. on the charts i shared, the volume is represented by the bars along the bottom. since I shared oil futures and your chart is S&P futures, I repulled the charts. on the 1h chart here, the last three bars are the volume after trump's announcement. the bar before that is where the "suspicious" volume occurs. if you look to the left, you can see we had a few hours of low volume that morning. every single day prior had tons more volume. on my 3m chart, can see the "suspicious" volume again before 11am, and again you can see that this trade is in line with volume on days prior, and if anything looks a little anemic. certainly spikes on the 3m are huge compared to the supposed insider trading.

@nullrespecter I basically agree but is your point that the size of this trade is negligible (agreed) or that this isn’t even real evidence there was trading on the announcement at all?

@QuasLacrimas for what it's worth, this is negligible volume. can't see it on the hourly. you can see it on the 3m. there's a reason they show the day. the days before, the volume on both the hourly and the 3 minute dwarf the volume here. it's a bald-faced lie that this is a big trade.

@willsolfiac the volume here is inconsequential, and you people are falling for a lie. they show the day chart because the days prior had tons more volume. look at the 1h, it's a lull in trading. look at the 3m, and it's repeatedly dwarfed in prior days.
