The United States cares greatly about the people of Europe and the bonds we share as a civilization. But we want strong allies, not seriously weakened ones. Europe must depart from the culture they've created over the last ten years. Otherwise, they will destroy themselves.

The first word in this country is United. Not the Disunited States of America. Of course, there are things you want that I’ll hate. Of course, there are things I want that you’ll hate. That’s called pluralism. The question is: do we meet in the middle and build something functional — or do we tribally beat each other’s brains in while running trillion-dollar deficits, alienating allies, and torching a rules-based system that created decades of prosperity? Compromise isn’t weakness. Consensus isn’t surrender. It’s how grownups run a civilization. Come on. We’re smarter than this.

Congress has effectively recused itself — and that’s the real crisis. What we have right now isn’t leadership. It’s a feckless collection of cowards. That’s what’s so disturbing. The founders built a system of checks and balances because they never trusted concentrated power. They assumed ambition would always need restraint. I don’t think they ever imagined a moment where there would be virtually no checks on someone as reckless and malevolent as Donald Trump. Democracy doesn’t collapse with a bang. It erodes when courage quietly exits the room.

Troops from European countries are arriving in Greenland to defend the territory from us. Let that sink in. And now Trump is setting tariffs on our allies, making you pay more to try to get territory we don’t need. The damage this President is doing to our reputation and our relationships is growing, making us less safe. If something doesn’t change we will be on our own with adversaries and enemies in every direction. Republicans in Congress need to stand up to Trump.
