@Noahpinion They're just not evenly distributed yet (thankfully)

@ramez Depends on the 2nd order effects? If they outcompete and destroy American car manufacturing we'd lose both warmtime manufacturing capacity and the process knowledge that goes with it.
If it forces US companies to adapt then it would be good for us, like Toyota back in the 80's.
English

Why not let the Chinese government subsidize cars for Americans? That, by the way, cut pollution and are more fun to drive? Seems like a good deal to me!
Jeffrey Dean Hochderffer@JHochderffer
@ramez Automobile manufacturing in china is heavily subsidized. Allow them in, but heavy tariffs.

@profontheright You've got to give the UK credit for voting their way out back in the 70's

A weird little node for Wan 2.2, the First-Middle-Last Frame I2V node.
If this is easy to use, I'll give it a go, better than a full-fledge daisy chain or real multi-frame workflow, no?

@CJHandmer @Summersaltcloud @paulg Happiness surveys all suffer from the "could you imagine a happier life" problem.
Americans may imagine more upside than Finns, so rate themselves lower relative to that potential.
Finns figure that they're already about as happy as they're going to get.

The knee of the singularity curve is inaugurated with an awkward video that just... stops... after casually revealing that O3 blows through the human average on the 'ARC-AGI' test and... uh... guess we need a new test guys... I get it, I wouldn't know what to say, either.

@ErikVoorhees @VitkusJustinas Tiny black hole like that will be putting out some Hawking radiation. Maybe that's what the artist had in mind?

@YesboxStudios Pretty sure @oceanquigley is the one who coined “roads are hard”
English

I've been keeping a milestone summary of Metropolis 1998's development since I wrote the first line of code in Nov. '21.
I summed the time I spent on road network/pathing code, and it comes out to a whopping 8.5 months 👴
Half that time was implementing (3-4 times) the road placement + graphics + node connections / hierarchy + on-road pathing.
About a quarter of that time was developing an efficient way to find, store, and access all possible shortest paths between all node pairs.
And the last quarter was for off-road and sidewalk pathing.
This might explain why there's so few [traditional] city builders on the market. Road networks are hard and time consuming.

@robinhanson Uplift animals to sapience
Recover extinct species (mammoth, neanderthal)
Create beautiful new species (e.g. glowing trees).
Rewild/garden vast areas of earth.
Make beautiful cities.

A monumental project (MP):
A) takes 10s - 100s yrs to achieve
B) makes sense for >= nation-sized unit to try
C) might be sacred quest to unify unit, inspire sacrifice
D) after-fact can measure if achieved by date
E) civ decay/collapse delays or cuts chance achieve
Please respond here with concrete MP suggestions.
With enough candidates, I’ll do polls re support.

@CharlesCMann It's a paper that seems tailored to our current political sensibilities? At least the popularization of it that I read in Scientific American had that feel.
English

Strong response to "Myth of Man the Hunter" paper last year, which argued women hunt in ~3/4 of foraging societies (big-game hunting in 1/3); new paper says that work was plagued with bias and errors--that they were unknowingly cooking the books. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@CJHandmer @William_Blake My take is that they work marvelously as film architecture but would be truly awful to live in.
English

I agree that post modern architecture affronts the human soul, but TC is idiotically waxing orgasmic about one classical Potemkin subway station. He should have taken the whole tour of Stalinist concrete disasters & should acknowledge the Soviet love of Brutalism.

Tucker Carlson: "Moscow has not been degraded by postmodern architecture that destroys your spirit" Chris Cuomo: "You believe postmodern architecture is designed to kill your spirit?!" Tucker: "Of course." Cuomo: "Why?" Tucker's answer will blow your mind. A rant for the ages:
