Who would imagine that Cap Anson was captured on film playing baseball? Here's a link to the Oakland Oaks Opening Day Parade (opponent: San Francisco) and ballfield antics of April 2, 1918. Making a ceremonial first pitch is female baseballist "Doraldina." archive.org/details/Oaklan…

@TristanSnell @jefftimmer Completely meaningless stat. Arizona has 15 counties, and 61 percent of the population lives in one of them.

@DM_Rubenstein @Orioles C’mon, Joe — “reasons that I cannot begin to explain”? How about this: because he’s an egomaniac with the self-control of an infant.

@_everythingism @mattyglesias But for Joe Manchin, the majority leader during the first two years of Biden’s term - the two truly productive years - would have been Mitch McConnell. I guess that was what you were wishing for.
English

@mattyglesias So "abundance" is about electing people like Joe Manchin?
The mask comes off...

As a big fan of @DavidFMarchese, I’m even more disappointed in whomever at the @nytimes decided to bowdlerize the great, famous Philip Larkin poem that constitutes his lede. Inexcusable. (Especially since, as I documented in 2021, the Times as published scores of fucks.).

If present trends continue, this Trump victory will swamp all the micro-explanations. Shapiro as VP wouldn't have changed this. Keeping Arab-Americans in Michigan wouldn't have changed this. It's all the big stuff -- defeat in Afghanistan, a porous border, inflation, and (yes, this really matters) Biden's refusal to acknowledge reality and step aside in time for Democrats to have a real primary.

@Vegasdave59 @nut_history He was even worse in private. Nasty, self-aggrandizing, and in the case of his son, hateful and cruel. Otherwise, a great guy.

@nut_history Tommy Lasorda without doubt. He was a Giant Richard with the Public away from the stadium 🏟️.

@dr_huffer @Jimfrombaseball I’ve met him, and he’s a delightful, engaging, and generous man. Weird, sure. But also all those other things.

@tedgioia I once heard an interviewer ask Benny to tell him about his friendship with Clifford Brown. I thought, just listen to the song, man, just listen to the song.

I don't have a lot of old magazines, just ones that are important.
The TIME from 1948 when it was revealed that Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier? Yep. Two magazines from 2016, one certain that Trump had lost and one certain Clinton had won? Of course.
I have this "Inside Sports" from 1981, but not because of Reagan. It's instead because this was the first introduction for most of the world to 'fantasy baseball.'
@okrent, and that wonderful title, is reason enough.

@LarkinWarren No - that was GREAT! The more he talked, the better for our side.
