I'm always seeking out the right words for what digital systems do to people. "Privacy" has become so overloaded it has become meaningless. "Censorship resistance" buries the lede — it's not just about speech and finance. Martina Kolpondinos has named one facet of it: Technology Paternalism. Systems that pre-decide your choices, justified as safety or efficiency. No bad intentions required — just decisions embedded before anyone can question them. Her test for any system: Can you override? Contest? Inspect? Exit? If the answer is no, the system doesn't trust you. It manages you. Utah just passed SB 275 unanimously — Senate 25-0, House 70-0. Their SEDI (State Endorsed IDentity) has a digital bill of rights, selective disclosure, and a Duty of Loyalty that says identity handlers must work in YOUR best interests. Not guidelines — statute.
