Recent developments in India's garment manufacturing hubs of Tiruppur and Noida have sparked renewed optimism in the textile sector. European brands have significantly increased their orders, catching local manufacturers by surprise. This surge is attributed to the ongoing unrest situation in Bangladesh, which has impacted its manufacturing sector. The textile industry, India's second-largest employer after agriculture, accounts for 13% of the country's industrial production and employs approximately 4.5 crore people, underscoring its critical importance to the nation's economy. Bangladesh, currently classified as a Least Developed Country (LDC), enjoys preferential trade arrangements with developed countries. This status allows duty-free exports to the European Union and the United Kingdom, bypassing the environmental concerns and taxes such as CBAM that they impose on other countries. This favorable arrangement has enabled Bangladesh's textile industry to flourish, with textiles accounting for nearly 90% of the country's total exports. The scale of this trade is substantial: Bangladesh's textile exports to Germany and the United Kingdom alone amounted to ~$12 billion in 2023. In contrast, India's textile exports to these nations stood at ~$2.3 billion, highlighting the considerable gap in market share. When Bangladesh joined the LDC group in 1975, the poverty rate was 83%. By 2019-2020, it had fallen to 20.5%, reflecting significant progress. This economic advancement has led to a substantial increase in per-capita income, surpassing the LDC threshold. Consequently, Bangladesh is set to graduate from LDC status in 2026. Following graduation, Bangladesh will receive a three-year extension period for duty concessions, subject to bilateral negotiations. However, the impact on their textile industry could be significant, with projections suggesting a potential 20% decline in exports. This transition period aims to soften the impact and allow for gradual adaptation to new trade dynamics. This shift presents a massive opportunity for India to revitalize and scale its textile industry, which has experienced de-growth in recent years. Overall textile exports declined from $41 billion in FY22 to $34 billion in FY24, with finished garment exports standing at $16 billion in 2023-24. The textile hub of Tiruppur, for instance, saw exports fall from $4 billion to $3 billion in the last two years. Given the potential market shift, India has a chance to double the value of its finished garment exports over the next 4-5 years. It’s a pity that the celebration of wealth is frowned upon by some in this country. It’s fallacious logic to say that everyone should be in perpetual mourning because there are income inequalities. Yes , Governments foremost duty is to address this inequality but to deride or ridicule wealth and lavish spending is a task for killjoys who are subconsciously jealous of other people for being rich. Time to call out such hypocrisy and recognise that there’s a new generation of aspirational Indians who are motivated to work hard to achieve such prosperity. America got rich and became an economic power as more of its citizens wanted to emulate business tycoons and rise too.
