Fulton Sheen is a 20th century bishop, not a primary source from the 1st–4th century. Quoting him doesn’t answer the historical question. The issue is what the earliest evidence shows.Scripture gives no birth date. The first solid Roman evidence for Dec 25 as Christ’s birth appears in the mid 4th century. And that same Roman calendar tradition also marks “Invicti” on Dec 25. That overlap is what we are discussing, not modern sermons.

No one is saying the physical sun, stars, or grapes are “pagan objects.” The point is historical usage. Solar imagery, star symbolism, and vine motifs were deeply embedded in pre-Christian religious systems long before Christianity adopted them with new meaning. Reassigning symbolism does not erase prior religious context. And Venus being Greek or Roman is irrelevant. The Roman Empire absorbed Greek religion wholesale. Rome ruled Greece, Egypt, and the Near East. Syncretism was normal. So pointing out pre Christian symbolism is not calling sunlight pagan. It is acknowledging the historical environment Christianity developed inside.
