The biggest DeFi hack of 2026 (so far👀) isn't a smart contract bug. What happened: - $292M drained from Kelp @KelpDAO - 116,500 $rsETH minted on Ethereum with zero backing - Omnichain supply conservation broken in one tx Root cause (likely): - Kelp's source-chain OApp key compromised - LayerZero Scan shows Kelp's own contract as source, 308 prior valid nonces - DVN verified what it was asked to. Attacker had the keys DVN = Decentralized Verifier Network. In LayerZero, this is the party that attests a cross-chain message is legitimate before it executes on the destination chain. Protocols choose how many DVNs must agree (1-of-1, 2-of-3, etc) - and that choice is everything. Indefensible config: - Kelp: 1-of-1 DVN (LayerZero Labs only) - EtherFi: 2 DVNs - Ethena: 3 DVNs - Even LayerZero's own ZRO: 2 DVNs A multi-DVN stack catches this regardless of root cause. The real lesson: modular security without mandatory minimums is systemic risk dressed as permissionless flexibility. The weakest-configured OApp sets the security floor for everyone. @aave fallout: - Attacker: $rsETH → ~$250M $WETH borrowed → walked - ~$196M bad debt - $WETH pool at 100% utilization - $5.4B withdrawal run - TVL: $26.4B → $19.8B in hours - AAVE -17.7% pricing $stkAAVE slashing - Umbrella softened from "will cover" to "explore paths to offset" LRT-as-collateral stacks trust assumptions until one breaks. This one didn't break validators or restaking. It broke key management. One protocol's config just became every protocol's problem.
