Impressive progress by India in achieving criticality of the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam, a key step forward in fuel sustainability and the future of nuclear energy. The @IAEAorg will continue supporting the safe and secure development of 🇮🇳’s nuclear programme. Congratulations, Prime Minister @narendramodi! @DAEIndia @PMOIndia

Have you ever seen an 80-year-old man with moist eyes? These aren’t tears of sorrow they’re tears of quiet pride and happiness. They dedicated their entire lives to what we today call the second stage of India’s journey toward nuclear self-reliance. There are numerous Homi(s) who gathered at kalpakkam or joined it online.. what a delight to see them succeed

I think many Indians aren’t nerdy enough to understand the achievements at the Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Plant.

Exactly, 2 yrs ago, curious PM Modi was at Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu), at commencement of core loading at India's 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor. We have now attained the criticality and entry into 2nd stage of 3 stage nuclear program More to come.

@anil_kakodkar Really great milestone..! It would be interesting to see if we can also build FBRs in fleet mode.

Today is a historic day. India has entered 2nd stage of our three stage nuclear power program with the achievement of clriticality of PFBR. Congratulations to every contributor to this critical technology that makes India only the second country to operate a large fast reactor.

@alpha_defense @cluelessTechie Correction..FBTR (Fast Breeder Test Reactor) is a test reactor with 40MW capacity. Which is small test reactor. While PFBR (Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor) is 500 MWe, medium sized reactor. Currently we are in second stage. India is the second country whcih is operating FBRs.

@cluelessTechie FBTR is a actual reactor and it went critical today so yes you are already using it and working on advance heavy water reactor with Th as fuel in Homi s 3rd stage vision

The famous 3 stages of India’s nuclear energy program. (Today we cracked 2nd stage here - BARC calls it 3rd as 2nd was PFBTR (prototype)) Stage 1 : Convert uranium into plutonium.. Natural uranium has very little fissile U-235. In PHWRs, U-235 undergoes fission to produce energy, while the abundant U-238 absorbs neutrons and converts into plutonium-239 (Pu-239). You generate power and create fissile material for the next stage. Examples: Rajasthan Atomic Power Station, Kakrapar Atomic Power Station, Narora etc Stage 2 : Breed more fuel using fast neutrons Fast breeder reactors use Pu-239 as fuel. When it fissions, it releases high-energy neutrons that convert surrounding U-238 or thorium into more fissile material (Pu-239 or U-233). Net effect: you create more fuel than you consume (breeding). Examples: Fast Breeder Test Reactor (critical today and Modi ji called it out, Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor - Base tech demonstrator) Stage 3 : Thorium to Uranium-233 cycle Thorium-232 is not fissile, but it absorbs a neutron → becomes Uranium-233, which can sustain a chain reaction. 👉 This enables long-term energy using India’s vast thorium reserves. Example: Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (planned) In one line: Uranium → Plutonium → Thorium → U-233 → Sustainable nuclear fuel cycle

Today, India takes a defining step in its civil nuclear journey, advancing the second stage of its nuclear programme. The indigenously designed and built Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam has attained criticality. This advanced reactor, capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, reflects the depth of our scientific capability and the strength of our engineering enterprise. It is a decisive step towards harnessing our vast thorium reserves in the third stage of the programme. A proud moment for India. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers.

Had MRI for the first time. Enquired to doctor, why MRIs is so costly. He replied, machine cost plus setup requires 10cr+. Need to pay 16-19% duty on machines as well. Come out with two questions in mind. First, why does the Government impose such duties on equipment used for essential and emergency medical treatment. Secondly, I wondered why, even in 2026, we still need to import such machines instead of manufacturing it in India.
