My latest article in @NikkeiAsia argues for India to fully allow private sector in the nuclear energy sector. Budget announcement on SMRs and recent reports of private sector interest are encouraging. However, effective implementation is key. asia.nikkei.com/Opinion/It-s-t…

2nd F-15 pilot (the weapons systems officer) has been rescued & extracted from southern Iran after a heavy firefight overnight, multiple reports say. No official statement yet, but if true, an incredible tribute to the power of CSAR and never leaving a man behind.

It is understandable that the IPS lobby manipulated its close proximity to the politicians, to get the CAPF bill bulldozed through the parliament, despite being fully aware that without any exposure at junior levels the IPS officers are completely unsuitable for deputations at higher levels. But the most baffling part is the parliamentarians succumbing to the pressure tactics of the IPS lobby without even making an effort to understand the security implications of the Bill. Passing of the Bill in its current form goes to show how non-serious our law-makers are.

These are the space and space-based intelligence wars that we have spoken about on #TheGreatTechGamePodcast with experts like John Klein and others. As China, Russia and the US battle it out, India must also rapidly build up its own capabilities.
Ryan Fedasiuk@RyanFedasiuk

An important story in today's @washingtonpost outlines how foreign geospatial intelligence companies like China's MizarVision and Russia's Terra Tech have long put pressure on U.S. satellite operators like Vantor and Planet. But now, Chinese and Russian imagery is being collected so frequently, and at such high resolution, it's starting to disrupt U.S. military operations in the Middle East. “The proliferation of more and more capable private sector geospatial analysis companies in China will augment China’s defense capabilities and ability to contest U.S. forces in a crisis,” said Ryan Fedasiuk, a fellow at @AEIfdp. Pursuant to China's broader strategy of military-civil fusion, “The state can benefit from private sector innovation and it can likewise disclaim credit or blame for the actions of ostensibly private companies, even when they are operating at the direction of the state or with the strong alignment of the state,” Fedasiuk said. I remember this 2003 article by @YashengHuang and @TarunKhannaHBS from my college days. Over the years, I have also tracked the growth strategies of India and China. Largely agree with the current set of reflections by @YashengHuang that India's diversified domestic private sector and its financial markets have generally been a strength for India. India will need to build on both strengths more. Its domestic private sector must remain dynamic and diversified - many large companies and mid-sized companies, rather than a few. Second, both global and domestic capital for entrepreneurship has to be unlocked much more quickly. The first phase of attracting foreign capital for startups was relatively easier. The second stage needs greater reforms but will be needed if India wants to build global tech giants. The question I would love to hear more on from @YashengHuang is whether he feels the economic models of China and India remain divergent, or are they converging in some ways and remaining different in others?

India's oil ministry confirms that India is buying Iranian petroleum products directly for the first time since 2019: "Indian refiners have secured their crude oil requirements, including from Iran; and there is no payment hurdle for Iranian crude imports."
Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas #MoPNG@PetroleumMin

The news reports and social media posts of an Iranian crude cargo being diverted from Vadinar, India to China due to “payment issues” are factually incorrect. 🇮🇳India imports crude oil from 40+ countries, with companies having full flexibility to source oil from different sources & geographies based on commercial considerations. Amid Middle East supply disruptions, Indian refiners have secured their crude oil requirements, including from Iran; and there is no payment hurdle for Iranian crude imports, contrary to the rumours being circulated. Claims on vessel diversion ignore how oil trade works. Bills of Lading often carry indicative discharge ports destinations and on-sea cargoes can change destinations mid-voyage based on trade optimisation and operational flexibility. It is reiterated that 🇮🇳India’s crude oil requirements remain fully secured for the coming months. On LPG too, some claims being made are incorrect as LPG vessel Sea Bird carrying around 44 TMT Iranian LPG berthed at Mangalore, India on April 2 and is currently discharging. #EnergySecurity #OilMarkets #FactCheck @HardeepSPuri @neerajmittalias @HPCL @IndianOilcl @BPCLimited @PIB_India

You’re omitting various salient facts, Marshall—not just centrifuge numbers, per the community note, but also Iran’s LEU stockpile, which expanded dramatically in 2020. You understand how SWU work and the significance of that build up. So why ignore it?

Marshall S. Billingslea@M_S_Billingslea

You’re entitled to your own opinion, @McFaul, but not your own set of facts. Under the first Trump Admin., even after we withdrew from the JCPOA, Iran had only 500 centrifuges and ZERO highly enriched uranium. Then along comes Joe Biden, who suspended sanctions enforcement. Iranian oil sales skyrocket 5x, billions in blocked accounts are transfered to the regime, & Iran builds 15,000 centrifuges spinning out more than half a ton of HEU. Those are the facts.

First, we experienced delays with our defence imports from Russia in light of the Russia-Ukraine war. We are seeing the same being played out with the US. There is just no alternative to robust defence indigenisation. Sooner the govt realises, the better.

It is a tragedy that ‘how it looks’ is a lot more relevant to Indian commentariat than how things actually are. Especially in the neighbourhood, commentariat is quick to announce India’s diminishing strategic relevance only for these countries to rediscover India soon enough.

This is still the case, and if anything the Iranians now see their position as stronger than it was a week ago. Negotiations based around capitulation, or pressure to reopen the strait, are of little interest to them.
Gregory Brew@gbrew24

If you're wondering why the Iranians are doing what they're doing, the easiest answer is: They think they are winning. They don't see a reason to believe anything Trump is saying. And they see a way to achieve their goals by forcing a US de-escalation rather than playing along

India (primarily through BARC in collaboration with L&T) has developed a proprietary alloy called Advanced Purified Reactor Vessel Alloy (APURVA). Why does this matter? SMRs (Small modular reactors) require much more frequent thermal cycling (turning up & down) than large plants. Standard steel fatigues & cracks under this stress. APURVA is designed to last much much longer w/o the micro-fractures that usually plague smaller vessels. India has solved the metallurgical bottleneck that was keeping SMRs as theoretical. We can now mass-forge these vessels in Indian foundries (like L&T/BHEL) at a significantly lower cost than global benchmarks.

Ships are getting out of Hormuz, without taking the Iran channel, but instead by hugging the Omani coast. Breaking Iran's blockade...or signs of Iran-Omani cooperation, along the lines of what Gharibabadi laid out earlier today?
TankerTrackers.com, Inc.@TankerTrackers

At least three Oman-bound tankers are making their MEGXIT today via the Strait of Hormuz. They are the DHALKUT (9888601), laden with 2 million barrels of Saudi crude; HABRUT (9500730), laden with 2 million barrels of Emirati crude; and SOHAR LNG (9210816), laden with Emirati LNG. #OOTT #ONGT #IranWar #Tankers #Oman

I have been pleasantly surprised by the pace at which the second and third SSBNs have been put into service, after the endemic delays with INS Arihant. I will be much more pleasantly surprised if India keeps one of these on deterrent patrol, with K-4s loaded, at all times.
