There's a chance now to build a big, broad, deep electoral reform movement. To do so, we will have to accept that we are making the same argument as some of the grubbiest people in politics. It's all very uncomfortable. But it must be faced-up to nonetheless.

Take it in. The first female chancellor. The first housing secretary who's actually lived in social housing. The first education secretary who was on free school meals. An energy secretary who actually believes in aggressively fighting climate change. Not a bad afternoon.

No one is unburdered by doctrine. There is no "what works" that isn't underpinned by what you want a country to look like, and what your values are. Everyone has an ideology.

Nothing in Liz Truss's political career became her like the leaving of it. Late to her own declaration. Getting slow-handclapped. Not speaking from the stage to thank her own volunteers and staff. Graceless, charmless, cowardly.

Reforms success this evening is being wrongly framed. It’s about stagnant real wages, sky high rents and house prices, imploding public services, a sense it’s all crap. Labour must address those issues from day one.
