Big shout-out to @roam. A teammate had a product suggestion. Nothing big - just a little idea to remove a minor, annoying point of friction that crops up most days in using Roam. I passed the suggestion along at 3:02 PM on Tuesday. It was built by 10:30 AM Wednesday. Wow.

@DannyMagazu @roam As a straight replacement for Slack it’s honestly no better. Maybe even not as good? But that’s not what Roam is about. It’s as @imintomoms says below. It’s the closest thing you can get online to actually being in the same office. Communication is just infinitely more efficient.

The best thing you can do for quality of life: Live within a 5 minute drive to your kids school.

If your team is fully remote, you need @roam. Smooth, immersive, and the best remote work experience I’ve tried. I love it.

@howard @BRannegger Marking magic minutes notes as read by default is another solid hi tweak that unclutters things. Next on my list? 1) Stop throwing away draft messages when I restart Roam. 2) Allow me to “mute” groups so they don’t affect my “unread messages” indicator or count.

@BRannegger this was for you too. And Magic Minutes no longer appear as unread by default thanks to your feedback.

OK @petersteinberg @GaingelsVC, there are very, very few people who @roam would change our UX for. Congratulations on making the list! And don't get used to it :-)

@howard @GaingelsVC @roam Oh @howard, you fell victim to one of the classic blunders - the most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia” but the secondmost famous is never give in to my pestering! But seriously – thank you to the @roam team for being so incredibly user-focused.

@Austen Ironically, with so little need for deeply educated faculty this school should cost a fraction of tin of most private schools – but instead it charges a massive premium.

Tomorrow wraps up the first 5 months of my kids attending the school where all of the learning is powered by AI (and no teachers). I get asked almost every day what the experience is like. In short: it's truly wild. Here's what it's like overall:

$500B in commitments to building AI in America. Stargate is certainly one of the most ambitious technology programs we’ve seen in the 21st century. To coordinate this all on day 1 is a huge signal for America leading in AI.

@howard @paulg @roam I *love* Roam but I think this is a misleading & manufactured statistic. I would say 70% of the *conversations* are audio only. And that’s because that’s how you default ALL unscheduled conversations. But personally? I hate it. Make it easier to see one another. Give me control.

I don't get why anyone would prefer Zoom for a two-person call. Surely an old-fashioned voice call is better. You can pace and think about what you're talking about instead of focusing on the other person's face. This is why you have better conversations walking side by side.

@paulg If you don’t like the look of a weekly chart, zoom out to monthly. Don’t like the monthly? Zoom out to quarterly? Quarterly not looking so good question? Zoom out to annual. It’s amazing how idiosyncrasies disappear when you take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

When I was running Viaweb I was puzzled by this kind of graph, with alternating steep growth and flat spots. Then I realized it was just sin(x)-like variability added to a consistently growing function. This is what "ups and downs" look like in a world of overall growth.

Some personal news: Moving on from Robinhood to build again. While there, I built their first self-improving AI agents, which we deployed to assist with customer support with shocking success. Excited to get back to pushing the boundaries of what's possible with agentic systems and AI native products.

@howard Sadly and somewhat ironically, the AOL HQ in Dulles has been repurposed into… a server farm.

I worry that every AOL Instant Messenger chat ever sent is sitting plaintext on some server somewhere in Dulles, VA.

@realEstateTrent Robotic surgery is a bit misleading, it’s more like “remote control” surgery. Robotic makes it sound as if a machine is making independent decisions. In reality, the surgeon is in full control of the instruments; it’s just that the instruments are controlled from across the room.

Son was playing with another kid at the park today, and I got to talking with his dad. He said he was a surgeon, and mostly operates using a robot. He excitedly shared a story about an elderly woman he recently operated on. She needed surgery on her abdomen, and he said the same surgery just a few years ago would have been major, requiring her to stay in the hospital for weeks. Because the robot allows him to make such small incisions, she was back home in less than 48 hours! Amazing how fast tech is changing healthcare, for the better.
