Ducks are my favourite part of RQ.

When I was working on RuneQuest & Glorantha with Greg in the 80s, one of our artists drew some duck characters and sought to make them less cartoony. Greg put his foot down. “No one wants to play a ‘correct’ duck. They want to be Howard or Donald. The ducks stay cartoony.” And they did. Greg didn’t pay attention to the attempts to give the duck race a tragic backstory or the whole “durulz” thing. “Why play a duck if you’re not doing it for pure fun?” In his image of Duck Point, he had proud duck parents taking eggs out for airings in baby buggies, being irascible, and chomping cigars (despite no one else in the world smoking). Those were the ducks. I invented a whole backstory & legends of the “keets” - a mostly-duck race from the far east, but made sure to keep the silly core. It was always about player fun.

"The Colour Out of Space," by H.P. Lovecraft; adaptation and artwork by Gou Tanabe. Some weeks ago, I posted about Tanabe's adaptation of HPL's "Call of Cthulhu." At that time, I stated that it was the finest adaptation of HPL's work that I'd ever seen in any medium - comics, films, games, etc. Well, this "The Colour Out of Space" adaptation only strengthens my conviction that Gou Tanabe is unparalleled in his treatment and presentation of Lovecraft's works. "The Colour Out of Space" is a personal favorite of mine; in fact, when asked what my favorite stories are by Lovecraft, I often choose this is my favorite of his shorter works. It was originally published in Amazing Stories, September, 1927. It's incredible to realize it's nearly 100 years old! Famously, HPL was writing it concurrently with his must-read essay, "Supernatural Horror in Literature," which makes an abundance of sense, because with "The Colour," HPL was pushing the boundaries of both the horror and science fiction genres, as similarly achieved by Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, M.R. James, and Arthur Machen. It's easy to take for granted the various themes and nuances that comprise the "cosmic horror" genre that we are exposed to in novels, films, comic books, and games, but Mr. Lovecraft was among its pioneers. One could argue that he was its innovator, but compelling antecedents show that he was drawing inspiration from some of his own favorite yarn spinners (some of whom I mentioned above) of the weird and fantastic. It's also easy to become jaded by cosmic horror stories and themes when ideas begin to become overwrought and redundant. That is why I would urge my friends, if you have read this far, to check out the HPL adaptations by Tanabe. They are exceptional, visionary, and quite awe-inspiring, in my humble opinion. This is a running list of the KNOWN options to pursue for my Sat night Gods of the Forbidden North group. Most are just 2nd or 3rd LV. Some of these options are Funster extrapolations of the text, but most are in the book (by @pulphummock) 1. They opened the seals on several giant undead and released them from the Barrow of Eight. The Halfling Taffin' Lari was last seen headed that way to investigate, he may uncover their role in this disaster 2. They recovered a map from the Shuun slavers and identified that it leads to their base of operations. They haven’t gone that way yet though. 3. The "Kindly One" that drinks at the Beluga's Bullocks is trying to hire mercenaries to escort him to three historical locations on the map. 4. Fort Jaldaran was sacked by undead. The party discovered the aftermath and cleared out remnant undead. Now Imperials are deciding whether to abandon the fort or not. A dozen soldiers occupy the ruin. 5. They killed a lot of guards at the House of the Snow Poppies in Valkengard. They never circled back with Izen or confirmed Lady Thora's story about her husband and son being long dead (despite meeting them the day before). Many loose ends. They have never returned to face them. 6. Skaalburg and Valkengard both have bounty boards with numerous clues that they have not pursued. 7. They recovered the Black Book of Morkaal, gave it to the church in Skaalburg. Thieves stole it in the middle of the night. It contains spells to summon powerful undead. A locate object spell told them it was far to the north now (that casting is now three months old) 8. Investigating the theft, the church used a ritual to cleanse a possessed member of the Indigo Shack in Skaalburg. The demon of the dark forest, Tarktuktulak was expelled from the body and destroyed the entire church complex there before escaping into the north woods. 9. They found the flooded Arktos Mine and partially explored it, but there are unexplored parts of the mine. 10. Cyrus the Bandit was captured, tricked the party into taking him to a hidden temple where a powerful sorceress and a large force of plate armored priestesses forced the party to give them Cyrus for safe keeping. Later investigation revealed this is a Sun Worshipping cult, blasphemous to the Church. 11. The party found the location marked on a treasure map, it was a glowing magical tree defended by Grakals (evil lynx humanoids). They cut down the tree and it covered them in a musk-like oil. It took them weeks to remove the oil and now they believe it no longer affects them. 12. A PC tried to learn more about the Fellowship of the Smiling Cloth by taking classes at their monastery in Skaalburg. The last night he came back, he claimed he was discovering something crazy. At end of last session, he failed to return from the monastery.

Just spent the morning reading my copy of ShadowCity. This afternoon was spent with @2ofadventurers making our ShadowCity map. Just in time for Alennah season. @ChubbyFunsterGC

Wow I almost got banned from an indie game creator’s discord because I asked why they aren’t on Twitter anymore. I’m obviously not an indie game designer but wouldn’t you want as much social media reach as possible? People choose to die on weird hills, man.

Table Top Minions earned my scorn when I asked him why he thought X was “a dumpster fire” He never offered me an explanation. Just blocked me. I watched his show, was in his chats and chatted back in forth with him for years, and supported his work with Ventrella. Needless to say, I don’t bother with him anymore, and I wish him the same success he likely wishes for me
